hey guys from Twitter.

we are glad to see you here but please understand that the fact that fediverse is anti-viral, anti-hierarchy and anti-capitalist is the point of it

please also understand that CWs, alt text and other stuff here is not there to "silence you" — it is to allow users greater agency over their feeds for their mental benefit, and to support disabled people.

this network was built by marginalized people. who disliked Twitter for the same reasons you do.

don't bring it back.

@fluffy @welshpixie Inbound follow requests *do* work for me, though I would not be surprised if this downgrade process was buggy in more than one (inconsistent) way either

If you have seen people adding content warnings to #AIart its because sometimes the subjects can be distressingly uncanny or represent some type of body horror with misunderstood anatomy. #TheMoreYouKnow #feditips

Note to white hacker culture, we can't keep brushing racism under the "this was built by Communist trans furries" rug. We aren't beyond question just because we are left wing. That's precisely the sort of attitude that has domestic abusing union leaders running a lot of the Brit left.

Radical politics is a community of practice not a moral position you assume via some identity signifiers.

As a trans person I'm ashamed of the way transness (white transness) is being drawn on to pinkwash.

Musk, funny

theverge.com/2022/11/10/234511

"The Verge reached out to Musk for comment. Twitter no longer has a communications department."

Twitter

Musk was like "look at the Fediverse! They have like a dozen fake Bidens! We should have dozens more fake Bidens than them!" and it was made so.

meta (infosec, twitter)

i guess this explains why all of infosec twitter (which i am not a part of) suddenly started following me on fedi all at once

handing around exports of your follows for people to just import certainly is an interesting idea especially if you follow locked accounts (like mine) and i am not sure if literally any thoughts about ethics and consent went into that idea (probably none)

thanks for completely flooding my follow request queue i guess and i hope you enjoy your gay shitposts filled timeline

uh oh we accidentally moved back to normal mastodon, this can't be good

"photo id verification for social media" is an idea that should never be parroted uncritically

@whreq Ik moet zeggen dat ik daar steeds minder hoopvol over ben...

Computer shop talk but fun

Tech 2: I put Unigine on there to benchmark it and it was... It was really good.

Me: Yeah.

Anyway, later, after they oogled the deck a bit, I asked if the price they charged was their normal 'full clean and service' price because it was cheap.

Tech 2: *nervous giggle* I er, I gave you a discount *blush* I was um, I was working on it, so uh, yeah, I was working on it anyway so, uh, I gave you a discount

I think 'working on' might have meant 'gaming' XD XD

CW meta

@yosh Heavily dependent on the reasons IMO. For lived experience and such, I agree.

But I've also seen folks (primarily the wealthy white 'electoral' Twitter crowd) literally argue "why should I care about people who can't handle this, they need to seek help" and invoking straight-up colonialist rhetoric. In that context it's unacceptable IMO.

fediblock rec meta

i've seen it going around, mostly from one user who came here in the last ten days, that #fediblock is "not to be used for individual users" and that it is "only for admins"

don't listen to that person, they are *wrong.* #fediblock was started by @CaribenxMarciaX as a way of letting communities protect themselves from bad actors and instances.

i repeat: #fediblock is EXPLICITLY open to everyone to report red flag users AND instances, and it has been for YEARS

meta

@pingiun While yes, that *is* probably a factor, it's also important to keep in mind that that's not *technical* difficulty, but people having to get used to an environment that prioritizes the collective over the individual - something that has been pretty much extinct in social media for years now.

I don't think it is avoidable (it's basically re-learning a skill), nor that it is necessarily a problem if people bounce off because of it (for now), considering how overburdened everybody already is dealing with the influx.

lewd adjacent joke about Elon

see this is why, as someone perpetually broke and historically poor, i don't like listening to rich people for budgeting advice. musk spent 44 billion dollars to get humiliated in public but everyone knows that there are people who can do that for like £2000

Yesterday I posted about worries re. moderation at mastodon.social/.online:

patreon.com/posts/on-our-polic

And asked the community to feed back about whether they'd like to do nothing, 'silence', or 'defederate'. The response was almost entirely in favour of silencing.

Today, especially after noticing that those two instances DO federate with an instance that hosts fascist content, we went ahead with that silence:

patreon.com/posts/74474015

Thank you, .art, for supporting a solid no-nazi stance. <3

re: here's my take on federation and blocking and all that

why do we have a system for advertising instances unworthy of federating with but not one for advertising the good instances?
