@f0x @polyfloyd @gmc @whreq Is het dan niet duidelijker om gewoon als message body een link naar de toot te doen, en daar een CW op? Of werkt dat niet qua openen binnen dezelfde interface?

meta, whiny twitter expats, somewhat gross hyperbole

@kescher It's more insidious than that, though; many of them don't quite argue against CWs as a concept, but seem to believe that it is somehow their place to decide what things "need" a CW and what things don't, despite not actually knowing why the conventions exist.

This is an entire thread of precisely that misery: mstdn.social/@Aravosis/1093113

@polyfloyd @gmc @whreq Ah, hm, dat is wel een goede. Daar weet ik zo snel ook even geen oplossing voor.

Dog with anxiety, food issues

@clacksee@wandering.shop Yeah, that definitely sounds like a long road. Glad that you've found a net-positive solution, though!

@xor I suspect that most people here are actually pretty interested in disaster tourism around cryptoshit, as long as it's behind a CW :)

(That link is behind a paywall, though)

There's a woman on the train this morning with her sunglasses sat up on top of her head and my first thought when I looked over that direction was "oh those are nice cat ears".

That's what five years on the fedi does to you, folks. Just be ready for it, ok?

what is the professionally appropriate way to say "sorry, code machine 🅱️roke" to your manager as an explanation for why your work isn't getting done

Dog with anxiety, food issues

@clacksee@wandering.shop I've had similar issues with my cat, it sucks :/

In my case, the vet eventually suggested just feeding her "recovery food" permanently, which I didn't even know was a (safe) option, but it has largely solved the problem in her case! The downside is the cost, of course. But even at her worst, she'll still immediately chomp down on it.

Bleak, internet, meta

@rune Of course, this only applies to unethical practices. Ethical-but-illegal actions are of course also illegal on the internet.

@nolan It's worth noting that these really seem to be performance issues contained to specific (overloaded) instances; this instance doesn't have open signups, and I've pretty much not seen any performance degradation on this end, which suggests that it's not a "cascade" across the network at least.

Please do not ask marginalised people to do the work of teaching you how to be a better ally, especially if that's not explicitly their job or business. Some of us may choose to do it, but it's on our own terms, not something to be demanded of us just by virtue of existing.

There are more than enough resources out there for you to learn on your own. Plenty you can observe. You don't need us hand-holding you through your every misstep. We've got our own things to do!

"Please teach us because the only way we can learn is if you tell us where we got it wrong" is not reasonable.

meta

@larand What I'm most concerned about are macro-level changes, honestly. There's been a ton of new folks pushing the idea that "defederating is bad", and likewise trying to wear down the moderation policies on existing instances. Both are threats to federation as a defense mechanism :/

"Defederate instances that platform fascists" very much includes cops.

meta

@larand I've certainly been trying, but I'm rapidly running out of energy and patience, and I don't think I'm the only one either...

Unfortunately many of the newcomers (including those who should know better) don't seem willing to do the work of "lurking quietly for a while to get a sense of how things work before claiming that things should change" that I did when I joined here (as did many others, of course).

Like, I'm happy for new folks to find a place here, but not if it threatens the safety of existing communities :/

meta, frustrated

It would be nice if some of the privileged tech folks coming to fedi would realize that their behaviour is on the "threat" side of "the fediverse is designed to protect vulnerable folks against threats"
