@jfhbrook That's mostly just things being slow because the userbase size tripled overnight without a corresponding growth in instances :p

I see a lot of people talking about how Mastodon "Feels like the Internet I remember from 20 years ago."

That's no accident. That's Federation. That's UseNet, IRC, Email, Message Boards, etc. What do they all have in common?

Federation: Users congregating around watering holes of common interest, but still being a part of a larger whole.

THIS IS HOW THE INTERNET WAS DESIGNED TO BE. And I am HERE for it.

every single day for two months now i get two emails from aliexpress, always with the same subject lines

this one was done about a year ago and I'm still pretty happy with it - fishing off a platform attached to a remaining section of the Atlantikwall, having a relaxing summer #PixelArt #ドット絵 #aseprite

@aeva Oh no, I was criticizing tendencies of programmers, not your toot :)

@aeva That programmers are often elitist by assuming they are linearly more intelligent than everybody else, and believing that they can speak for everybody else, and therefore anything that bothers them must bother everyone else too

When I joined #mastodon, I just wanted an open-source #twitter clone.

I got more than that. Subtle design differences made for healthier conversations in ways I wasn't expecting.

Here's a blog post to try to capture those differences and why they matter. scott.mn/2022/10/29/twitter_fe

fedi meta

Interesting to note that the authors of ActivityPub (the protocol Mastodon is based on), including @cwebber whose thread I just boosted, have received very little attention compared to the Mastodon guy. w3.org/TR/activitypub/

Realized I didn't do an #introduction, so here goes -

I'm a #woodworker & #artist in #Hamilton #Ontario #Canada making #sculpture, #marquetry, #boxes, plus various other projects including #spooncarving, small #furniture, and acoustic treatments.

Really enjoying Mastodon and the Fediverse so far. This place seems to be absolutely exploding with amazing artists and makers.

Looking forward to being part of this community.

Here's a box. I posted it before, but this is a better quality pic :)

People treating cell phones like they treat Mastodon: "ok...so you're saying I get a phone number, but I have to pick a provider? wtf that sounds like work...but I can call you even if you're using a different one, because they all talk to each other? so fucking confused rn"

@ZaneSelvans From what I can tell, searching for a hashtag really *searches for that hashtag*, and not stuff tagged with it. It then turns up every hashtag that has ever been seen and is similar enough, with an indicator of current activity. When you click a specific search result (ie. hashtag), you get the feed of currently known toots that contain that hashtag.

Fediblock, journalism

After some consideration, I've suspended journa.host from the server I run (not with this account). There's quite a lot of decent people signed up there, but also at least one prominent right-winger (The National Review's Jonah Goldberg), and I can't risk it.

Also, reporters mining social media for fodder without the authors' knowledge or consent is a plague on every other social media platform, and I think fedi should nip it in the bud.

#FediBlock

elitism

@aeva A lot of this seems to boil down to an unspoken belief that programmers are intelligent and everybody else is dumb, and therefore a programmer must be in the optimal situation to determine what is and isn't too hard for "normies", and the idea that different people just find *different* things easy or hard (in ways that they don't see) never comes into the picture at all.

One of the things I have always loved about the culture of QueerMasto/TransFedi (or whatever we’re calling the cool part of the internet these days), is that we actually *enjoy* people posting their selfies.

We recognize the importance of people finding joy in their own beauty and sharing that with the rest of us.

I hope that shit never dies.

belangrijk daarin: thermo ondergoed. all day everyday. thermo legging én thermo shirt met lange mouwen.

Reminder to please CW anything to do with politics and particularly “look at the awful things these right-wingers are doing”. Being able to choose when and how to engage is important and makes a big difference to the overall mood of the timeline.

And please don’t boost politics posts with no CWs either - I’ve been seeing a lot of that recently from new arrivals

re: mastodon admin meta, bad

@bun @s0 Popularity-chasing is precisely what you *don't* want in a healthy social environment, though.

So here's what I've learned.
Mastodon isn't Twitter.
And that's by design.
You've grown used to things designed to give you that anger rush.
Mastodon is very deliberately built to avoid that.
The temptation is to replicate your Twitter experience.
Picking arguments, amplifying trolls.
Please don't.
This isn't your house, people here put time into building it.
Content warnings, ALT tags.
Don't turn it into a replica of the mess you just left.
If you miss the fights, the birdsite is still there.

ugh website boy’s fucking app

I’m not sure what vibe I want a post-report screen to have but “vindictive” is Not It
