I think one large contributor to fascism here (Italy, we have some experience with it) is the idea that we're simply beyond it now, it can't happen, which also extends to the rest of Europe for us, we're 'civilized' and beyond such things.. apparently

@lokenstein@eldritch.cafe Honestly, legitimately how I came out as gay in school as a teenager. Went to new school, decided to just treat it as a Known Fact even though I'd told almost nobody, casually mentioning it when relevant in some way, and it actually worked out surprisingly well! One guy who tried to make an issue out of it and immediately got stared down by classmates.
