Let's do a Q&A thread! Ask me anything conceptual about Nix, NixOS, or related tools, and I'll answer honestly and to the best of my ability (including if the answer is that it's not a suitable tool yet!) :boost_requested:

Please don't ask specific "how do I fix ____" questions, though - those require too much energy and back-and-forth for me to answer right now, and are probably best asked in the support room on Matrix instead.

Anything about the concept, the governance, whether certain problems are already solved, etc. is fine though! Particularly the kind of questions that are difficult to find a coherent answer to by yourself.

My perspective is that of someone who has been using NixOS for a long time, and is somewhat adjacent to governance, but who holds no formal position in any of it. I'm enthusiastic about where NixOS can go, but also critical of where it is today.

(And if your question is about what utility function to use, it's probably in this chart that I made: nix-cheatsheet.pixie.homes/)

Substack feels like medium.com in 2013. I wonder if it will end up the same in a few years.

If you want to blog: use a static site generator. Don't tie your publishing to a domain you don't own.

@silvermoon82@tech.lgbt Honestly this is probably one of the most offensive things about the contemporary education system, too: instilling the belief that the important thing is memorization, rather than research skills and information processing.

I have spent a lot of time explaining to Russians and Ukrainians that Telegram is not a safe communications channel (I even wrote a Telegram Harm Reduction Guide) but people still use Telegram and they still tell me they do so because it's "safe" and "secure."

I hope that at the very least Telegram users in eastern Ukraine will stop.

What's the easiest way to set up a simulated network with ISP-style NAT? Preferably without buying dedicated hardware for the purpose, and preferably reproducible for other developers.

Usecase: I am developing a P2P system, and need a reasonably representative environment to test my software in, and how well it deals with shitty residential networking configurations.

I'm a developer, not a network engineer, so my knowledge of networks is limited to a developer perspective and I don't have the spoons to learn it in-depth.

Boosts appreciated :boost_requested:

My problem with hairdressers is they cut my hair a certain way, then they style it, but then they do not give guidance on how to style it again, so after a haircut, I look good for three or four days max (often much less, if it rains or there was a tiny bit of moisture in the atmosphere) before the whole look will disappear when I wash my hair and then look shit until I go back and pay them again.

it is official, @pastelpunkbandit officially wins greatest instance header image

Very good read for anyone working on accessibility:

Avoiding the engineer-saviour trap - Jenny List, Hackaday
hackaday.com/2017/08/03/avoidi

"And in that moment, I almost fell into a trap. I was setting myself up to be the Engineer-Saviour, riding in on my white charger to deliver the users of the room from the ceaseless hell into which its designers had put them. The overwhelming smugness of Helping Someone Less Fortunate Than Myself was reaching out to envelop me, and it was time to put the thought down and back away real slow."
