the reason why lake uses this book as an explanation for how they identify and their confusion around gatekeeping is because the history of words like “lesbian” or “butch” or “queer” have always been inclusive of trans, nonbinary, and gnc folks. to be a lesbian, or a butch, was not strictly to be a wlw or a masculine wlw....it was a lifestyle and a subculture and an identity deeply connected to gender.
