Another nice to have when upping the character limits, is also changing it for the /api/v1/instance endpoint, which apps like Tusky parse to do it in their gui.

It's a bit more involved since Mastodon doesn't send this key at all, so you need to add it to the app/serializers/rest/instance_serializer.rb

Add the attribute in the list of attributes, as :max_toot_chars
Then define it next to the other 'def' blocks like

def max_toot_chars
4096
end

Restart mastodon, and Tusky should pick up this change when opening the compose menu :)

swapped out my props from 3 to 4 bladed, and lens guard from PLA to PETG, let's hope she flies even better now :)

and we're back with 4096 toots, 2048 bios and 128 displaynames

@meqif@octodon.social yep, the aliexpress sellers will usually give you the SK9822 but they're interchangeable so its fine

@meqif@octodon.social I tend to use the Arduino framework for them, works well enough for led animations etc

These LEDs are a through-hole WS2811 variant, because the mushroom caps were made for 3mm, and I had those laying around

For my other projects I tend to always use the SK9822/APA102. It has a clock line so is usually less affected by distance, and the higher pwm speed makes them less annoying to people that are sensitive for that

@meqif@octodon.social yep, the esp32 is cool but the esp8266 nodemcu is already overkill for this project lol, esp01 might've been better but those can be kinda annoying to work with

These mushroom hat thingies are from a super cheap aliexpress bedroom light (80 cents), and I took those and put them on addressable leds.
Then I sawed off this log, and hollowed it out to fit the esp8266 and led protoboard.
Really love the result, it will be a gift for a friend :3
