Short PSA:
WD-40 is not a lubricant. It is a brand of penetrating oil, also known as penetrating fluid. If you have metal parts that are rusted solid, WD-40 might help you get them to move so you can take them apart, but it evaporates quickly and leaves no lubrication behind.
So if you want to *oil* something, you need a lubricating oil. Which one depends, but which one is never WD-40.
