IGM/invoulentary sex reassignment in France

France is working on a new bioethics law, and some people are suggesting they add protections against IGM for intersex children: uk.news.yahoo.com/lawmaker-cla

genitals, intersex, hypospadias, intactivism

I read an article yesterday that made me rethink my stance on operations to correct hypospadias in children and infants. intersexroadshow.blogspot.com/
Hypospadias correction operations are closer to forced gender reassignment of intersex children than I realized. One in 125 children assigned male at birth have operations performed to correct hypospadias. Many of these operations also require circumcision, the tissue of the foreskin is used to construct a urethra.
The author is an intersex professor, and he shows how much of the medical literature on hypospadias tries to erase the existence of intersex genitals with inaccurate diagrams, drawn to look more like a "normal" penis that has a misplaced urethra.

A good lecture by Brian Earp given to the UK National Secular Society: "Religious freedom, equal protection, and the child’s (gender neutral) right to bodily integrity": youtube.com/watch?v=GBH0g_Cl7R

"A united front is needed: all children have a right to bodily integrity and protection from medically unnecessary genital cutting- female, male, intersex"

I just ran across a good article with illustrations and explanations of different kinds of intersex genitals. It explains how many of the operations performed on children without their consent are unneeded and often harmful. intersexroadshow.blogspot.com/

"We need society, the medical field, and intersex communities themselves to acknowledge that nature provides humanity with a wide range of forms, so that all of our bodies can be recognized as valid. Unless there is an actual rare functional problem, our bodies should not be altered in infancy, and only those functional problems should be addressed. Our genitals should be altered only if we ourselves request it, to make ourselves comfortable in our own skin, not to make society comfortable by our medical erasure. Society must come again to embrace the diversity that is nature's gift to us."

All children deserve to be protected from genital cutting without consent, whether they are male, female, or intersex.

“Now is the time for doctors to respect the rights of intersex people, use compassionate care with children and only perform surgery when the health of a child is at imminent risk or it is consensual”

Female Genital Mutilation in the US

Currently, there are 21 states that have no law against FGM, only California has a law restricting intersex genital mutilation, and there are no laws against male genital mutilation. All children need to be protected from genital cutting without consent, whether they are male, female, or intersex.

Female Genital Mutilation in the US

Last November, a judge ruled that the 1996 federal law banning Female Genital Mutilation in the US was unconstitutional, in part because it did not protect all sexes equally, and because it did not fall under the Necessary and Proper Clause or the Commerce Clause of the constitution. Brian Earp explains this better than I can: youtube.com/watch?v=qc2-NB9nWt

Female Genital Mutilation in the US

A friend sent this to me today: reuters.com/article/us-usa-rel

A woman in Kentucky from a strict christian family had her genitals mutilated along with her sister when she was 5 years old almost 40 years ago.

Cutting the genitals of children before they can consent is wrong.
