@jrwr aaaa! You made hat-chan, right? Nice to find you online! Excited to see hat bridge!
Hey fedi friends! I've been loving Momodou @Saikoubarry 's toots on here about his trees and life in his village, but recently his area was hit by a flood like they'd never seen before. It literally carried off the roof of his house! https://mastodon.xyz/@Saikoubarry/106548104657732650 (Image description: A round one-storey house with the roof torn off, the support struts left bare, with supplies and items surrounding it.)
Georg @gcrkrause has been raising money to help Momodou's family repair the flood damage, and plans to send the funds in a couple of days (and will provide the receipt, of course). If you'd also like to chip in to help Momodou out please contact Georg for his PayPal! It was my birthday last month so also consider it a birthday gift to me?
@dumpsterqueer@ondergrond.org you might be interested in capsul.org. We're currently at capacity, but we are a little volunteer hosting group maintained by friends.
Unfortunately, we're US-based and don't offset our carbon use, so I'm not sure we're a perfect fit, but I thought I'd letcha know we're out there. Cloud co-op is starting to play in this space a little, too, but the timeline might be out a little ways still.
Tonight we are happy to announce that we will have a special guest star in the #CircusInPlace video chat!
Join us for the Emperor Norton Coffee Hour starting at 7pm UTC-5 to find out who will be joining the clowns for a training session:
Witchcraft, appropriation, racists, newbies
@vortex_egg I think a lot of this weirdness is predominantly online, though?
Like, there's a looooong history of appropriation and occult stuff. You cannot learn in this space without reconciling that at least a little bit. There's been some really great content at local pagan events coming from speakers from various cultural backgrounds and helping to mend fences.
I think some of the heart of the issue is that online communities feel cohesive, but there's no real way to get a good feel for how respected someone is, only how many 'follows' they have, which is usually more related to activity than anything else. You get a bunch of relative newbies in the same place and a strange 'averaging out' happens. If a relative expert moves in, no one can tell, basically?
It feels like statements like 'its unethical to learn magic from a poc if you're white' come from a place of wanting to respect sacred secrets, but it's just wildly misguided. It's a 'compromise' kind of idea that let racists and well-intentioned liberals co-exist and I find that super troubling.
Thankfully, I haven't seen anything like that in our local community, but stuff like this just underscores the importance of *having* a local pagan community.

@f0x oh hey it me
@dumpsterqueer@ondergrond.org totally. I guess I'm kinda saying, like, even a very basic model can be really really fun. Low power consumption and easy onboarding seemed to matter most.
It's a cool project and I hope it catches on! When you have something ready to be field tested, maybe give me a ping? There's a couple of hacker friendly events out here and we might be able to help get some feedback for ya. :)
@dumpsterqueer@ondergrond.org this reminds me of my very favorite defcon thing ever.
Someone made a hat that hosted its own network and served up a little image board. The hat was huge and lit up. Hard to miss. Whenever you were in the same room as hat-chan, you could log on to the image board via a smart phone and shitpost about the talk you were in.
It was incredible.
IMO, it's not super future far fetched, it's feasible today. The localization of the network was a big perk, as was the ephemerality of the whole thing. People wouldn't post contact details, but they would say stuff like 'I'm the girl in the blue shirt sitting in the second row, let's meet up at the bar after this talk'.
And yeah, people were actually pretty cool to each other on it.
@heartles@egirls.gay I uh.. That's about 2,500 lines, right?
That's big and concerning, especially without more context... But C++ can also be kinda chonky. I still have nightmares about the repo full of 500kb files I used to work on. Everyone acted like it was totally normal?? There was no documentation standard and it was just really unpleasant.
Maybe the language or the culture around this language just kind of encourages this sort of behavior? Like 'if it doesn't impact the runtime, it's completely without value'? I don't know. That sounds awful, though, and I hope you don't get handed a file like that.
@AgathaSorceress@eldritch.cafe I often refer to mastodon as a bit like a combination between Twitter and Tumblr. The long text post support is real nice. I've never been a regular on either of those sites, though, so community wise, I'm not really sure how the vibe compares. Pretty sure my corner of mastodon is friendlier than most of Twitter, though.
The best way to sum up Tolkien's influence on fantasy literature as a whole was, of course, written by Terry Pratchett:
“J.R.R. Tolkien has become a sort of mountain, appearing in all subsequent fantasy in the way that Mt. Fuji appears so often in Japanese prints. Sometimes it’s big and up close. Sometimes it’s a shape on the horizon. Sometimes it’s not there at all, which means that the artist either has made a deliberate decision against the mountain, which is interesting in itself, or is in fact standing on Mt. Fuji.”
@f0x 🎉
Tiny soapbox, society is awful
@crazypedia I'm glad this is a useful strategy for you. I think this is how people are supposed to banish imposter syndrome. The connection between others noting good work and imposter syndrome shutting up cannot be more direct, in my mind.
It is also absolutely absurd how synonymous being a woman in tech and dealing with imposter syndrome is. I see it at almost every gender minority event I attend, and I assume it's the same way for other folks with minority experiences, too.
So uh, congratulations to you. Next step, go tell other people they're right, too. Especially if they're a little different from you. :)
Aesthetic face mask advice
@miramira@is.nota.live honestly, the kn-95s are well-ventilated and don't get as humid as traditional fabric. They are not cute, though.
Otherwise, you likely want one made out of athleticwear fabric. It'll be ineffective for filtering, but so long as that's not the point, it's no trouble. I'd look for single layer masks from knit fabrics, particularly synthetics. Alternatively, maybe a translucent silk scarf-style one from sissilita on etsy? https://www.etsy.com/listing/855107145/100-mulberry-silk-scarf-mask-with-filter
