Thinking out loud about a future use case for GoToSocial:
Have it running on a local network in a pub/bar/event/whatever. You get a guest login for posting whatever. Posts expire a bit after you log out.
So you could go to a bar and if you don't know anyone you can shitpost on the network or post a selfie and be like 'talk to mee I'm gay' or whatever.
@dumpsterqueer this reminds me of my very favorite defcon thing ever.
Someone made a hat that hosted its own network and served up a little image board. The hat was huge and lit up. Hard to miss. Whenever you were in the same room as hat-chan, you could log on to the image board via a smart phone and shitpost about the talk you were in.
It was incredible.
IMO, it's not super future far fetched, it's feasible today. The localization of the network was a big perk, as was the ephemerality of the whole thing. People wouldn't post contact details, but they would say stuff like 'I'm the girl in the blue shirt sitting in the second row, let's meet up at the bar after this talk'.
And yeah, people were actually pretty cool to each other on it.
@starless very cool! yes! that's what i'm going for :)
i don't mean far-fetched in the sense that it's not possible to implement, it wouldn't be that hard with GtS, it's more like stuff for later because we gotta do the basics first
@dumpsterqueer totally. I guess I'm kinda saying, like, even a very basic model can be really really fun. Low power consumption and easy onboarding seemed to matter most.
It's a cool project and I hope it catches on! When you have something ready to be field tested, maybe give me a ping? There's a couple of hacker friendly events out here and we might be able to help get some feedback for ya. :)
