racism? on *my* fediverse??
I'm a white person who's been on the fedi for 4 years. I witnessed the rise and fall of PlayVicious.social (aka "PV"), an instance that was thoughtfully moderated by an all-BIPoC team. it was a nexus of brilliant, creative, funny people who made the fediverse a better place. and then it shut down, and so many Black and Brown people gave up on this place as a result. it was a huge, huge loss.
why did that happen, you ask? I'm gonna let Ro (former admin of PV) tell that story, because it's come up again recently: https://ubiqueros.com/notes/97vj3h30hp
I was a w.e mod when this went down. it's all true; he's not exaggerating.
Hi everyone! I am an #antiracisteducator and public school advocate looking to connect with other folks who are making the transition to #mastadon. Please follow me if you are interested in understanding what is happening with attacks to our public education system. I was recently targeted by alt right provocateurs and political opportunists, and my story reflects what is happening in school districts across the country. I love learning and sharing info that supports our #CollectiveLiberation. 💗
I documented some of my recent experiments in reverse-engineering the Print Gocco, a Japanese DIY printmaking tool from the 1970s. You can read about it here: https://www.nobadmemories.com/blog/2022/05/printmaking-as-play/ #theWorkshop
I’m wondering if y’all can help me build a community of trans people of colour on the tag #TransPOC as i miss the wonderful people i knew on a different animal themed app.
After seeing reports of racism and bad moderation I guess i’m just trying to find my people. Boosts very welcome.
@Pixley @lennie I was trying to remember the term I heard about murmurations causing radar distortion, and it's "radar angels," but in trying to find that I located this actual, excellent sentence on wikipedia:
"It was not until the later 1950s that it was widely accepted that birds were the primary cause of angels."
@nebuchi For Black folk, in many ways, the experience is explicitly worse than Twitter.
"If you even speak about your experiences in a way we don't like, you may have your account suspended" is not something that happened to them on Twitter in this way.
These are 3 cases we hear about because they're high profile women with specific expertise in confronting racism. Unseen are the hundreds that just say, "Nope! Hard pass." And leave.
Moderation is hard.
😑
Another Black person played Mastodon "instance roulette" and lost.
We need a Mastodon instance Green Book pronto or this ain't gonna work.
This is starting to feel like the WW2 Dunkirk evacuation where the Black and Indian Commonwealth soldiers were abandoned on the beach...
Please suggest: instances with non-white admins or mods
I would like to be able to make recommendations to BIPOC who have been scared off by the (non)moderation of mastodon.social and some of the other bigger instances.
If you know of an instance where there are non-white people who are doing the moderation (and also that the moderation is good) please let me know.
Thank you, comrades! <3

@forestjohnson this mug is so sick
Spent the beginning of this morning recording for season two of #TwoClownsInACloset !!
If you haven't gotten to check out the podcast that I and @RussSharek did last year, you can check out last season here:
https://circusfreaks.org/podcast/
We still need more questions for season two, so if there's anything you'd like to ask any member of our clown troupe, please do! You can drop them in a reply here, dm either of us, or catch our contact page on the main site!

@zoec good skirt!!
Today remembering Natalie Nguyen. Many people will be too new to remember her, but she was well-known and important in the fediverse's early years, and she died too soon, and she was denied dignity in death.

Here’s a thread for #TDoR I posted seven months ago about supporting young trans people in your life. I think it’s still most of what I have to say.
@MiraAssafK
I am sorry that happened. ❤️
To be honest, if you're afraid of breaching decorum, you might be right. Mastodon is not a monoculture. If you feel like the vibe is 'don't talk about things that matter to you', a different instance might treat you better. Of anyone, though, you are the most-qualified person to assess this.
I hope to hear more about racial injustices in academia on here, for what it's worth.
I really love your phrase "problem tooter", and would like to lend whatever heartfelt confidence you'd like to have in your life. "Problem tooter" is a delightful creation and you seem very cool.
I hope you follow your heart and be as much of a problem tooter as you would like. No obligation, though. :)
re: TDoR, thread of ideas for safety and equity (plenty of tips for allies/folks with power), boosts and additions welcome, holidays
Invite friends with estranged families to join in with your own holiday stuff. Even if a lot of people might not be able to make it, the ones who can are usually really glad to have something, since it might be the only holiday party they attend that year.
re: TDoR, thread of ideas for safety and equity (plenty of tips for allies/folks with power), boosts and additions welcome
Engage in politcs in ways that make things better, especially if your trans friends say that a policy matters.
If they're worried about something and there is a call for public comments, leave one if you can. If there is something on your ballot, make sure you go vote. Equity is more than just trying to improve a broken justice system, but a broken justice system will continue to produce inequities and injustices.
You might be afraid to use your 'real name'-- if you are, why? Is there an actual, specific threat you're worried about? If not, and especially if there isn't an you're just an ally, lend a little bit of your privilege. Any consequence you feel as a result of supporting someone's safety will be much more dilute than the actual threat to someone else.
In my experience, the biggest impact is being aware that a web search can confirm that I do publicly support trans rights, and that I should remember this if someone comes out of the blue and says something weird at me. But honestly? Nobody has, and I've been public, about supporting this stuff for almost a decade. Don't sweat it.
