For more than a century, reactionaries have told people artists are pretentious and think they're better than you as a way of attacking art itself and blunting the social impacts of art.
Don't buy into it. It has always been bullshit. Art is made by people and always will be. When it's at its best, it is for the people too. There were whole art movements dedicated to this idea. Artists devoted the work of their lives to it, they believed it so firmly.
