musk, zuckerberg, activism

Apparently someone hacked a bunch of crosswalk buttons in Silicon Valley to imitate the voices of Musk and Zuckerberg and talk about all of the damage that they're doing: paloaltoonline.com/technology/

ethical software licensing, long

There's a problem with non-commercial/ethical/usecase-restricted software licenses, in that it breaks the public commons - everybody is going to have a different set of ethical constraints, and so if people build on each other's work (as they would in a public commons) you will eventually end up with so many different constraints applying to *some* part of the project, that practically nobody can use the whole thing anymore.

But then there's end-user software. Unlike software libraries and such, the end-user software is the thing that has commercial value. And unlike software libraries and such, there are usually no meaningful ways to build on top of it, other than creating a direct derivative of the existing thing (and so sticking with the existing license would be fine).

So how about this: extract as much of the technical logic as you can into stand-alone libraries or packages, and license them under an unrestricted FOSS license. Then publish the actual end-user software (which would mainly be the UI, architecture, data model, that sort of thing) under a more restrictive ethical or non-commercial license.

I don't *personally* think that ethical licenses are very practically useful due to the power dynamics in copyright, but if you want it as another tool in your toolbox anyway, this seems to be the approach with the least collateral damage?

US travel, in-person conferences

This is not a subtoot, I just don’t want to hijack someone else’s post.

People are asking about the future of in-person academic conferences in the US now that <gesticulates> this. People who are unable or unwilling to travel are going to miss out.

This is not a new problem. People from some countries, notably in Africa, but also South and Southeast Asia, have found themselves arbitrarily denied entry to the US for decades.

People from geographically remote regions must pay significantly more for their longer-haul flights. [Why was WorldCon 2010 so tiny? It was in Melbourne.]

People with disabilities get to play all these games on the Extra Hard difficulty level.

Carers. Queer people. Immune compromised people. Single parents.

In-person conferences _already have been_ selecting against many groups of people.

I commend the organizers of conferences talking about how they are going to retain the attendees they’re accustomed to having, but I’d like them to give a thought to the many participants who have already been excluded.

We have CEOs telling junior developers to not bother learning how to code, try to vibe code. That’s scary! You don’t learn much with vibe coding. Learning is the best part of the job!

I tell my junior engineers to not outsource their learning. AI can’t do the modeling, the architecture, the understanding. Can it do boilerplate? Sorta! But the job isn’t writing boiler plate.

We knew this way back with the no silver bullets essay on incidental vs necessary complexity.

Dead Men Don't Rape

When Delilah Bun (aka Lauren Tate, the 20-something front woman formerly of Hands Off Gretel) released a 2022 song called "Dead Men Don't Rape", men wrote all sorts of disgusting things to her on the advertising platform Instagram.

When my angry boys in Dimmu Borgir, the Norwegian black metal band, released a 2023 song called "Dead Men Don't Rape", not a single person attacked them.

Funny that. It's almost as if .. no, I can't quite put my finger on it.

Whenever some pitches me on an amazing solution to a problem, I usually ask

1. Is this really a problem?

2. If so, is it a big problem?

3. Does this solution actually solve the problem?

It’s amazing how often the answers to one or more of these questions is no.

I've made a Transfem wallpaper all by myself! :neofox_science:

Made a PC (7680x4320) and a mobile (4320x7680) variant, hope y'all like it.

If someone wants to share or edit it: I've licensed it under the Creative Commons BY-NC-SA 4.0 license, so go ahead and use it
:neofox_floof:

Update: I've published a wide desktop (15360x4320) variant of this wallpaper for usage with two monitors here:

(for anyone wondering, the formula is of Estradiol)

This is what happens when this one does not have access to a hot-air-station >:3

Hey fedi, so I have this cheap doohickey for using computers away from a desk. It's got a touch pad and keys and is absolutely the right solution for the problem

But it sucks. The keys start bad and if used too much stop registering reliably, the touch pad ain't great, and it keeps losing connection to the dongle despite it being like 8 feet away

Is there some kind of premium version of these that exists? So far I've only ever seen the terrible dirt cheap ones for sale anywhere

(If you don't mind plz boost for reach I am *desperate*)

EDIT: to be clear the handheld/gamepad-like form factor is what makes this work so a more traditionally keyboard shaped device with an additional trackpad isn't really a suitable replacement

Spent an afternoon at @hackalot shifting furniture around. A “new” free stuff cabinet, and the big storage rack moved to the main space to vastly increase storage around the soldering table. We then added a bunch of light to make the table more attractive and usable. Also added a light above the 3d printers.

It's that time of the year again, huh?

Yep, spring is upon us, so aside from seasonal flu and rainfalls - we have #kittens raining down!

Here's a thread-report on how that goes.

Say, hypothetically, if I wanted to start a pubmed.gov equivalent in Canada and I wanted the Canadian gov to fund that. What would the process look like?

23andMe just declared bankruptcy. They're selling the gathered data.

If you have used their services, delete it *now*.
