So I got a new 'weather station' thing that shows barometric pressure as well as the 'forecast' (basically icons indicating the type of weather).

Except in configuration mode it also lets you *set* the barometric pressure and weather forecast. The manual mentions none of this. I have questions...

the configure script on its way to check the value of the cosmological constant, vacuum magnetic permeability, and the mass of the electron

Need a recommendation please.

My mother uses Paint Shop Pro 8 (from the mid-2000s) to print greetings cards. There are print templates on there, which she fills with artwork she has made and uses them to print onto cards to prepare for Christmas or when she has art fairs coming up.

My parents' laptop runs on Windows 10, and recently it has been offered a free upgrade to Windows 11, which a) has failed because the laptop is too old and b) they don't want anyway.

I don't know if they are thinking of transferring to Linux, but if they do, does anyone know of any similar software that's easy for someone non-technical to learn?

I doubt they're thinking of getting a new laptop, just a new OS on it.

PSA: Firefox 139 Nightly has a new feature: AI-summarized link previews. It requires opt-in currently.

When Firefox fetches the preview, it does so with the X-Firefox-AI header set to 1.

matrix spam, transphobia

Unsurprisingly, the widespread spam attacks on Matrix are being carried out by a bunch of transphobes.

Not really news to anyone who's in queer communities on Matrix, it's long been a suspicion that these attacks are by the same people who were harassing queer communities, but now I've seen enough to be certain about it.

Anyone who is blind, or who has worked with the blind, knows how expensive our technology can be. This couldn't be more true with relation to braille displays. Even the cheapest costs at least $799, and it's already behind the newest in that line, at $899. This is the Orbit Reader 20 and 20+. Now, a student in India wants to change that by creating a display that is truly affordable (under $50)! Please pass this on, so that we can give him greater recognition within the blind community. Even if it costs a bit more than he initially suspected it would, there is no excuse for the $2,000 to $5,000 average price of such technology when cheaper alternatives can be designed! He is determined to bring this to market, so let's help him do it and show our appreciation for his hard work on this life-changing project!

My wife and I started up a small press! We're focusing on hopepunk novellas for adults, and today I've written a bit about how and why we're doing that.

@joepie91 Applies to way more than just open source, tbh. Be an incompetent government and enjoy people infighting because the only thing they can do is argue to the death about how to solve the issue, cos no one has agency to solve issues.

One of my least favourite dynamics in open-source is when mismanagement by project leaders results in brokenness for years that frustrates contributors, and because the contributors do not have the agency over the process necessary to fix those issues, tension starts building and they start lashing out and attacking each other instead

Remember, when the internet gets disbanded, don't blame Hasbro Interactive. They had nothing to do with it.

yo, man. word on the street is that there's a nasty sickness spreading through town that makes you talk like a character from a late 2000s racing game. you can kick it to the curb if you win three races... but i doubt you got a chance in that lame ass ride of yours. i've added the qualifier to your T-Mobile GPS. see you in my rear view mirror, dog.

yt-dlp solves so many problems

need to have an offline copy for reliable playback? yt-dlp

want to play something for a long time unattended but YouTube keeps auto pausing? yt-dlp

need to get around an arbitrary wall for something that's provided at basically no cost anyways? yt-dlp
