Morning reminder: being unapologetically yourself and loving the things you love is inherently an act of resistance against people and systems seeking to control you
If you find yourself for a moment forgetting the horrible things happening and getting caught up in a small act of creativity or joy, that isn’t betraying anyone or anything. Being fiercely ourselves is good
If you’re affected by the IETF LLC’s inaction, or just find the body in charge for designing the Internet we all rely on to be in the wrong here; I invite you to sign my open letter to the board: https://boycott-ietf127.org
The IETF LLC thinks it’s reasonable to continue holding meetings in the US, whilst the safety of many attendees is in danger there

reminder that whenever the gop complains about "censorship" what they always always mean is "you're making me feel bad about being a white supremacist." when they say that universities shouldn't be able to "indoctrinate" students, what they always always mean is "you shouldn't be able to tell people that white supremacy is bad." it is never a good faith argument and it should never be treated as such

Put differently, it's not even that I distrust Graber exactly... but networks centered on a single person or company have a single point of failure, and we've learned the hard way about how easily single points of failure can be exploited by fascists.
If you value progressive organizing, I posit that you should be wary of inheriting such single points of failure. Make your advocacy and activism resilient to any one person or organization being compromised.
The problem with the whole "Meta has used tens of millions of published works for training LLMs for profit" thing is the "training LLMs for profit" bit, not the "there are irregular channels for accessing books that would otherwise be prohibitively expensive or literally impossible to access" bit.
Like, "piracy" is going to be the only way a lot of people can access a massive portion of the information and media out there until capitalism ends. Whether the act itself is "good" or not, it's necessary for a lot of people.
What isn't necessary is LLM "hyperscalers" doing it industrially.
US academics hosting international conferences which are already planned: I'm sure you all have experience pivoting to all online events and don't need the help I'm able to offer. But do DM me if you want to hear about running a large event via FLOSS platform and tools. I'm super happy to help.
I went to strongly encourage you to switch to virtual now. There are significant advantages to this approach including lower carbon, greater participation from Latin American participants and others who are normally excluded by US border policies, and, of course, its a way to protect your reputation and respect your overseas participants.
In person international travel to the US puts researchers at serious risk of arbitrary detention. You owe it to them to not ask this.
By having a virtual conference, you have greater scope for international participation and can maintain the international relevance of your institution. You can still build on networking and collaboration opportunities for yourself and your students.
I can help you organise/host an algorave connected to your event. This could include sonification of data connected to your discipline or other artistic exploration of your topic area. This can include a chat channel and wprknfor networking. The cross disciplinary exploration is often very helpful.

- No alt text (request) = no boost.
- Boosts OK for all boostable posts.
- DMs are open.
- Flirting welcome, but be explicit if you want something out of it!
- The devil doesn't need an advocate; no combative arguing in my mentions.
Sometimes horny on main (behind CW), very much into kink (bondage, freeuse, CNC, and other stuff), and believe it or not, very much a submissive bottom :p

Strong views about abolishing oppression, hierarchy, agency, and self-governance - but I also trust people by default and give them room to grow, unless they give me reason not to. That all also applies to technology and how it's built.
