technology rant

@elilla Reminds me of this powerful kunstbüro poster I saw at GPN. It was for an artist talk by @charlotteeifler titled <<IMAGINE ALL TECH IS MADE BY PEOPLE WHO LOVE YOU>>

Didn't see the talk, but that poster stuck with me. Just imagine.

I don't necessarily disagree that phones might be harmful for kids' development.

I just don't know if they're nearly as harmful as say, repeated covid infections, a collapsing biosphere, a justifiably bleak vision of their future, or even a prevalent lack of agency, independence, and spaces for socialisation.

I'd focus on those first. Then phones.

delivery options in the UK:

UPS: our drivers are wearing shorts 365 days of the year. this magically results in packages arriving. we're not sure how this works either.

Royal Mail: is it a letter? we're good at letters. haven't quite got the hang of boxes though.

Yodel: we thought about delivering it and it's the thought that counts.

Evri, wearing a fake moustache and a t-shirt that says "totally not Hermes": your package has been thrown in a bush just off the M6. fuck you.

A while ago, Aldi in NL recalled some cutlery set due to "having sharp edges which can result in injury".

Like, I understand what they were going for there, but I think they could've phrased the problem a little more clearly :blobcatupsidedown:

health

Yeah so I'm fairly sure by this point that I have *some* form of EDS. But I'm not sure what exactly, and it doesn't help that I don't have the infamous bendy limbs

Guy at the store kept making comments about Monday and although I had been under the assumption that it was Sunday when I headed out this morning, it's hard to keep track this time of year.

So I continued on with my Monday until I reached another stop on my errands, that is closed on Sunday.
🤔
All I know is that it's January.

it's sort of remarkable that despite the entire internet being designed to sell you products these days, the actual process of buying anything on the internet is absolutely awful. like if someone told me 15 years ago that the whole point of the internet would be to sell people things i'd assume that finding what you're looking for would be incredibly easy and every website would look like mcmaster-carr. but instead every website looks like a online casino held together by duct tape and every company is constantly lying to you about everything

hot take, javascript

There is no justifiable reason for so many different extensible (yet mutually incompatible) bundlers to exist, given how trivial of a task bundling is, and the fact that they *do* all exist should raise some uncomfortable questions about why

i hacked a led backlight into a thinkpad r61 this weekend. was kinda pissed at myself because i did the same thing years ago with a x200, but didn't keep notes, and had to basically reverse-engineer myself. so this time i kept notes, which means that in case you need some guidance for hardware crimes, i got you covered:

Bird photography is relatively gear-intensive because birds are small and usually prefer staying away from humans. But after doing this for awhile, I know of no piece of gear that makes more of a difference than consistently being on the beach when the sun comes up. The light and the water and the sand know how to show off, and you just need to be there to click the button.

hello fediverse, i am looking for a page i found some time ago that gave a very clear and neutral summary about llms to non-technical people, basically concluding at every step of the way that there’s very little actual value they can bring. it was in the form of summary cards, about 10 of them iirc. i have looked everywhere but can’t find it anymore. i’m pretty sure i saw it on fedi.

edit: was found: needtoknow.fyi/cards/

People who were at #38c3: Please check yourself for flu, especially if you’re feeling shit. Anti-pyretics (Ibuprofen, Aspirin) are first line treatment. Antihistamines can help with any inflamation. Vitamin D and C are always good things to take to aid your immune system.

Drink lots of electrolytes if possible, water if not. Watch your body temperature - your instincts will be to wrap up tight because you feel cold and that is not a good idea if your body temperature is already elevated.

If you’re already on anti-retrovirals (e.g. PrEP) remember to take them, they can help with some viral infections.
