there comes a point where people need to grow up and realize that it's not people "voting with their wallets", or young men alienated by feminists who blame them for everything, or middle america abandoned by coastal elites

folks know what trump is and chose him as a weapon to be wielded against the people they want to hurt

remind yourself of the old essay "the only moral abortion is my abortion"

trump voters are exactly these people: they'll take your kindness one second and tell you you're a murderer in the same breath

they're the people who take welfare and then rail about "welfare queens" getting rich off of food stamps

the people who yell about free speech but silence everyone they disagree with

the immigrants who hate immigration

you can't appeal to them because these are, fundamentally, people whose biggest problem is with the very idea of living in a fair society where people who are Not Them are their equals

that's why they target who they target

by the way, resist the temptation of heavily drinking, smoking, gambling, or drugging your misery away. all that money you would spend has a chance of helping or even saving you otherwise, and ephemeral euphoric haze isn't going to undo the fascist reality, as much as it is a bummer.

only thing they can achieve by trying to become more like the growing right extreme options is loosing their voters towards the center that find it absolutely unacceptable

people supporting the extreme right will never be able to trust Kamala Harris, Olaf Scholz or Donald Tusk no matter what they say, even if they're willing to agree with certain steps they are taking (like xenophobic policies)

the only thing that can achieve is solidifying support for the extreme views they had already, with the same preference they had already

damn i wish centrist and liberal parties all over the world stopped appealing to the electorate they have absolutely no chance of convincing and instead focused on maybe not discouraging those who actually might want to vote for them lmao

happens all over the world with the rise of far-right

no guys, the solution to growing support of these groups is not shifting towards them

their voters will never trust you and the only thing you can achieve is reassuring them that "yeah, our beloved fascists were right all along" :)

the main thing im thinking about is how the #mastodonforharris crowd spent hundreds of thousands of dollars to support a campaign that was doomed from the start instead of helping their own community and made themselves look like complete dickheads

when picking a slogan, try to make it something that 50% of people already believe in, 40% of people don't care about, and 10% absolutely detest / can't stand / it makes them mad / they disagree with its very definition

i don't want this to seem as a "i have it worse than you" post. i wouldn't even go to america if it meant leaving this place once and for all. but all i wanna say, people have survived this. i am surviving this. we can get through this. but we won't if we lose will to fight.

so give yourself some grace, go sleep, relax, just to shake off the panic. it's never good. and then come together with friends and fam, and organize. don't give yourself up without a fight.

this looks grim, i know. this is definitely not good.

what i want to tell you all though, is that i live in an autocracy where queer rights are nonexistent.

living here is painful. but we still have queer spaces. we still have people who try to help and fight back even when the odds are stacked. don't lose hope just yet. you guys aren't as far gone as us, you have changing parties and strong grassroots movements, you can still turn this around.
