PSA: if you're trying to use a Steam emulator to do offline/local/account-less multiplayer in a Windows game under WINE/etc., then replace it with the Goldberg emulator - as far as I can tell, it's the only Steam emulator that works under WINE and where the developers deliberately ensure that. Some games may need a specific build, see the included readme.
If you're using a pirated copy of a game under WINE/Proton and it crashes but according to ProtonDB it should work, then this is almost certainly also your issue - it came with a Steam emulator that doesn't work under WINE.
(There's also a Linux version of the emulator, but that is only useful for native Linux games - it will not work with Windows games under WINE.)
[Settler opinions not welcome]
A leading criminologist has said the crown has been acknowledging and apologising for the racism of its law enforcement agencies ever since Moana Jackson’s He Whaipaanga Hou report in 1987.
“These apologies are all worthless insults to the Māori people as long as the Crown never actually stops its racist violence.”
“This report shows what we have known for decades: the police are a racist, violent, occupying force in Māori communities,” said Emmy Rākete.

Early this week someone mentioned the lack of education/scientific resources in Mastodon (compared to twitter pre-musk), and that we have to start somewhere, so here's my contribution for this week:
A comprehensive list of grants (public and private opportunities) assembled by Johns Hopkins University https://research.jhu.edu/rdt/funding-opportunities/
That's the largest and most detailed grant resource I know of, if you know other ones let's contribute :)
Boost for reach: Looking for a UI/UX designer for paid work on a F/OSS project.
The fundamental goal is to improve the new user experience for ngscopeclient (https://www.ngscopeclient.org/)
I'm not looking for coding/implementation work specifically, more of general human-factors etc feedback on how to make the UI easier to figure out and as intuitive as possible. It's a complex tool with a large feature set and striking a balance between seas of menus and toolbars blocking your view of the data, and making the UI impossible to navigate, is not trivial.
Experience with electronic test and measurement, scientific computing, DSP, or data visualization is a plus.
If you're willing to offer discounted rates for open source projects that's a bonus.

I'm desperately trying to get off of Twitter but the #gamedev world (particularly the indie game dev world) seems deeply entrenched there.
I'm trying to build my network of game developers on here. Please share your suggestions on who I should follow! Thank you!
Something that just occurred to me: a lot of people identify with and cheer on the protagonist in movies who knowingly takes a difficult decision at great cost to themselves or even others, a potentially destructive or violent one, which they know must be taken for the greater good.
And yet, many of these same people will immediately condemn radical direct actions undertaken by activists under exactly these circumstances, where they only see the outcome and not the process of careful deliberation and consideration that went into it.
medical, neutral-ish, caffeine (2)
(It drops it by approximately 10/5, to be more specific)
medical, neutral-ish, caffeine
You might know that the right amount of caffeine helps as a focus aid when you have ADHD...
But what if I told you that that amount of caffeine, for me, also consistently drops my blood pressure into a healthy range, when it would otherwise be too high due to my kidney disease?
request for information, abuse allegations
Does anyone know more about the history of Chris Boden, AKA Physicsduck on Youtube, formerly involved with the Geek Group?
There are various stories floating around on Reddit about them, enough to raise serious questions, but at the same time it's all mired in ableist commentary and it feels like the story is more complex than it seems on the surface.
gun mention
@paintedsky@mastodon.gamedev.place I'm reminded of that interview someone did with... I think a writer from maybe the Sopranos? And the interviewer asked if the writer was interested in an LLM, and he was like "fuck no", and then the interviewer pressed a little more and was like, "if you were stuck on how to end a scene, you wouldn't consider asking ChatGPT for ten ways to end this scene?" and the writer responded "I would rather put a gun in my mouth and pull the trigger"
and I think about that, a lot, and how basically while obviously he was exaggerating, I do think that level of vitriol is appropriate. We're burning down forests for fucking nothing. Complete trash.
every time I see someone online mention a new movie they like my first thought is no longer "aww cool someone liked a movie, maybe I should go see it" it's instead "wicked, looks like WB paid for some bots to shill their new movie in the comments, luckily *I'm not falling for it!*"
It's bleak out there folks.

Strong views about abolishing oppression, hierarchy, agency, and self-governance - but I also trust people by default and give them room to grow, unless they give me reason not to. That all also applies to technology and how it's built.
