Incredible shenanigans. Since January 1st 2024, the Netherlands has a new sugar tax, an extra tax on sugary drinks like soft drinks, lemonades and processed fruit juices. Of course the dairy industry have managed to secure an exception: products containing dairy are exempt from this sugar tax. However, plant-based dairy alternatives like oat milk DO fall under this tax. And to add insult to injury for vegans, now fruit juice and soft drink manufactures have started adding dairy to their drinks in order to wiggle out from under the tax too! So not only do vegans now see the prices of plant-based dairy alternatives rise, they also see increasing swathes of non-alcoholic drinks yanked from their palet because of added cow milk to evade taxation... Yay capitalism!
An excellent video about Microsoft's shady business practices around Minecraft, the forced account migration, and how it has resulted in people losing access to a game that they paid for: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rUFDRAEducI
It’s compost awareness week, so of course, we’re celebrating community composting!
Transition Lymington collects kitchen waste from nearby homes, and it makes their community garden self-sufficient in compost for all the lovely local, no dig, peat free, nature friendly growing they do.
Coexist set up Bristol Living Soil community composting project with a Transition Together seed funding grant last year. “Biologically complete, deliciously fertile soil can only be made at a small, local scale with time, care, energy and attention.”
Here’s how they do it, another project to celebrate in #compostawarenessweek!

In 2024, $.32 gets you a Cortex M0, 4kB RAM, 16kB flash and a built-in 24MHz oscillator. All in a package that's terrifyingly close to being accidentally swallowable.
(index finger for scale - blurred so i don't get comments about fingerprint opsec)
@ben I have to give this idea a very definitive and unambiguous maybe
I doubt this solution will ever make it into the Matrix protocol, to be clear. I gave up on the MSC process a while ago. But I'll definitely be working on it for #Atoki.
The official word from the #nixos foundation in today's live Q&A session is (paraphrased) "oh there's always someone who's going to object to something so we don't want to make any decisions regarding ethics".
What a fucking cop out. And what an insult to the community. Imagine thinking this is an appropriate response to 128 contributors signing an open letter within 24h condemning an ethical decision that you've made.
Curiously, it looks like this problem can be solved with basically the same mechanism as the Spaces access control replication MSC that I wrote a while ago
In the process of moving to @joepie91. This account will stay active for the foreseeable future! But please also follow the other one.

Strong views about abolishing oppression, hierarchy, agency, and self-governance - but I also trust people by default and give them room to grow, unless they give me reason not to. That all also applies to technology and how it's built.
