There are actually multiple types of estimates:

* I have all necessary tools and information and I'm able to get to hyper focus -> I'm already working on it and you'll get it EOB
* I have all necessary tools and information and the task is completely boring and unimportant -> it may never get done, but with multiple deadlines, body doubling and other mind tricks, we can slowly get there in a few months
* I have all necessary tools and information and it's interesting, but I can't focus much -> well, it will be done before the deadline, but like in a four hour long rush in the middle of the night and still be better than if a neurotypical person would dedicate 40 hours into it.
* I don't have tools nor information, I need a lot of other people and preparations and the communication is slow, things are broken beyond simple fixes, people don't understand -> it'll never get done.
* I have a body doubling work partner who is mostly neurotypical, is able to close things properly, do regular meeting minutes etc. -> we can build a rocket from trash and put a mouse astronaut in orbit.

And many variations in between.

New blogpost! “Subtitles, Closed Captions, and Open Captions: What's the Difference?”

If you've ever wondered whether "closed captions" imply the existence of "open captions," or why video players seem to distinguish between captions and subtitles, this post is for you!

Come for a somewhat goofy 1950s horror film trailer; stay for the takeaways about an important #accessibility tool.

Are there any :anarchism: zines explicitly talking about/linking stop cop city and Palestine struggles? #anarquery

I expect that the full conversation will be published eventually. So far, my paraphrasing/interpretation would be that they are trying to do the "inclusive of literally everyone" thing, and are not cognizant of this being impossible.

Whether that is deliberate or not, I can't really judge. But it doesn't really matter much for the end result, if they stick with this approach.

My ongoing discussion with an unnamed moderator is not encouraging so far, as to the safety of marginalized folks.

friendly reminder that you didn't see any shoplifting

I have signed nixos-users-against-mic-sponso. to oppose advertising by eg. defense contractors in the community.

I personally think it doesn't go far enough, but I also recognize that the scope of this particular statement is intentionally limited. This, to me, is only a small step, but one I do encourage people to take.

This is nerve wracking, and I dread finding out the notifications number.

I recommend reposting/boosting/whatever your local brand of it is. If you can and want to, that is.

Freedom in technology must include freedom from technology.

We must not create societies where the price of admission is owning a device controlled by one of two trillion-dollar US corporations.

We must safeguard people’s access to public services and the everyday necessities of life via alternate methods.

Technology should always be a progressive enhancement.

Do not let Silicon Valley privatise your access to modern life.

re: bad ux

I hate features that clearly exist because project management refused to let developers implement something properly and instead make users feel bad like they're the ones who are wrong for wanting the feature, actually

where you push a button and instead of doing the thing it says it's going to do it just prompts you with "actually, you should push this other button, instead"

fuck that

NixOS, governance :boost_requested:

Some places where conversation about the Anduril sponsorship is currently ongoing:
- discourse.nixos.org/t/should-o (discussing whether the sponsorship is desirable)
- matrix.to/#/#nixcon-sponsor-di (Matrix room with currently a discussion how to respond to it as a community - please read back some history before getting involved to avoid reruns!)

Idk who said it first but I find the sci-fi idea that earth *is the spaceship* very compelling. we are on a vessel hurtling through the cosmos that has organically nurtured various forms of life for an extremely long time! What if we treated this planet as the space ship it is and maintained it! This is the gospel I am talking about

NixOS, arms dealer

Let's just say that people's responses to Anduril sponsoring NixCon reveals an awful lot about who people are, what privileges they have, and how much time they spend understanding the fate of those without them

“Affection at reader (threat)“ is one of the most fedi content warnings…

sorry boss, there's rays of sunlight coming in through the window, it's nice and warm on my body, I won't be coming in today, I hope you learn to find joy

why oppressed folks seem so angry

extracting this bit from another unrelated post:

like, one of the reason why people (read: oppressed folks) seem to fight so strongly and forcefully for things is because like. we are so used to being completely ignored. it's tiring to go through the same stages of speaking nice at first, then progressively less nice until you find the right level of firmness that's required to get someone to actually listen to you.

I know because I've done this. back when I was at university, I went to physically sit down with loads of different people to ensure that they were doing things correctly, with trans folks in mind, ensuring that they were actually using people's preferred names instead of their legal names in the university systems. it was fucking exhausting, because I would do this, and then myself and others would be invited to meetings where people show up with big slides and powerpoints about these cool new ideas they have that showed they didn't even fucking listen to us. at one point, they claimed that they needed to add a profanity filter before they could let anyone change their preferred name in the system, because apparently, letting people naturally face the consequences of naming themselves "fucknut johnson" was worse than trans people being treated respectfully

so, if you're at this point and just fucking tired of dealing with the bullshit and want to get your point across, it feels like you approach every situation with full body armour and a battleaxe to just talk things out, and it sets people off. like, woah, calm down, why are you so uptight about this?

because I know otherwise you won't fucking listen to me. and sure, maybe I'm being too strong for you specifically, but I don't know that until I try, and quite frankly, I'm done fiddling with people's attention spans until they listen and will instead just slam my fists on the desk in front of them immediately. gets their attention.

I don't like showing up to situations like this, but at a certain point I have to, because I have tried the nice option and it has failed me every single time. so, if you don't like it, consider how many times the nice option has worked for you and people like you, and think about that instead

NixOS, governance :boost_requested:

If you care about the future of , its governance, and its policies, right about now would be a good moment to get involved.

Some of the issues currently on the table:
- NixCon sponsorship by an arms dealer (Anduril)
- Moderation issues in the community, safety threats to marginalized folks
- What acceptable forms of participation are for the formal RFCs

A lot of things feel like they are coming to a head right about now, with the community growing rapidly, and I suspect that the decisions made are going to have long-term effects.

So if you've been waiting for a moment to get involved, that moment is probably now.
