@eniko I do grocery shopping for a living right now, and I mask every time I go out. Even if it weren't a matter of caring about myself, the people in the store, and the people I'm shopping for (who are often elderly or disabled), there are sometimes other people who DO mask in the store (again, often elderly or disabled) and you can see the relief on their face when they realize they're not the only one.
That by itself is worth it.

@noracodes one thing I discovered running a cute fandom thing for a long time, including many years of depression-breaks,
is that user communities develop huge expertise at the level they best understand
when I leave something broken for a while, people create rigorous knowledge in how the system actually works, and share intricate practices for how to work around it
and it’s often for a bug that would take me half a day to fix if I only had the half-day; but I don’t, so they find their way without needing me
idk I think a lot of engs would be surprised how many people have developed deep technical expertise in the system they built and its bugs and limitations, and deep workflows they’ve never conceived of—because users often don’t have access to the same tools, but refuse to be beholden

And while a subscription on streaming services is upwards of $15 per month, a library membership is anywhere between $0 and $50 per year.
