Don’t know what happened yet, but the tricourant FLIRT-trainsets used by VIAS :vias_alt: for the train Arnhem - Düsseldorf (temporarily) lost their certificate for the Netherlands. All trains Arnhem - Emmerich are cancelled for this weekend.

Are people still really wondering why the site is a haven for horrific hate speech and misinformation, particularly in the context of the war in Gaza?

"“Basically you have a laboratory, an artificial laboratory, that you can play with on your PC in ways that you could never do ethically, certainly, in the real world.”"

I don't even know what to say. Tech solutionism at its finest because people can't NOT be racist.

I think people massively underestimate the role of the advertising industry in many of society's largest problems. The problem isn't limited to ads being annoying.

never have i wished for the wholesale, irrevocable destruction of an entire industry as long and as hard as i wish for the advertising industry to be utterly immolated, the earth it was on salted, and signs placed around the site reading "this is not a place of honour"

I just spend 20mins to find a passage from a book by a Norwegian author that I read as a child JUST to make a point about the international fixed calendar AND decks of cards on another platform.

This probably is the most obscure little tidbit of knowledge I will have shared this year.

I think since I've already put in the time, you should also suffer this knowledge.
You're welcome.

Police nabbed a graffiti artist attempting to flee the scene of committing this (picture) adorable art in the harbor of Visby, Gotland, the large island just outside southeastern mainland Sweden.
The 27-year-old was prosecuted for vandalism, with the prosecutor demanding a fine.

Police's interrogation records said e.g. that "His intention is to offer free art to passersby." and... the District Court of Gotland... agreed.

The court's ruling states that no harm has been proven and that the artist "on a gray and cracked concrete façade which is the short end of a loading dock, has depicted a lamb.", that "The way in which X has illustrated the lamb testifies to an artistic work carried out with a certain amount of artistic and technical skill." then finally "According to the District Court's opinion, the beauty value of the cracked concrete façade - in purely objective terms - has increased through X's painting." so the 27-year old artist was acquitted by the court, which also ruled that the police had must return the spray cans they had confiscated.

Damn hippies. ;-D

If you are running a #Tor relay you should upgrade as soon as reasonably practical. There is a crash bug that appears to be remotely exploitable.

We believe clients are not affected.

fyi there's a browser extension called "Indie Wiki Buddy" that will link you to community-owned wikis when you're on a commercialized wiki with a community alternative.

it's really nice to see communal wikis sprouting up, it reminds me of the early internet days.

also, fuck fandom.

In case there are any obvious conclusions I'm missing:

What do people think the biggest lessons from the history of the web are? What do you hope "comes back", what are you hoping stays dead, and what do you hope is to come?

I'd appreciate RTs (and long detailed replies lol)!

I needed to put a bare SBC away so I went into the Tech Room at work to look for anti-static bags.

I didn't find any, technically... but there's what looks like them in a box labeled "static bags".

clearly this is the exact opposite of what I need!

Klarna has caved to the threat of a worker strike and signed a collective bargaining agreement with the unions.

It’s the first big tech unicorn in Sweden to do so. Workers have been organising elsewhere too. Very curious and excited to see what happens next.

hot take but if you're going to be vendoring unicode (standard or cldr) data in your software then at least make it easy to supply updated unicode data to recreate your vendored input as part of the build process, so that when you inevitably fail to update your stuff to the latest version, it can just be supplied that way

PSA: Apparently the showrunner is planning on renaming Series 14 to Season 1, and restart the numbering. Yes, for real.

If you use anything that consumes an episode database, expect it to break in unpredictable ways...

The problem with "not all cops are bad" is that it means that you don't recognize the power of a fundamentally corrupted and oppressive structure over individuals.

That means that you believe that people's behaviour within those structures is decided by themselves individually, and that makes you vulnerable to "good cop, bad cop" strategies.

And *that* means that I simply cannot trust you not to rat out me or my friends when the rubber meets the road, maybe even without realizing it. That I cannot trust you to have my back when cops come for me.

It doesn't matter how good your intentions are, or that you believe this out of fear for a world without police, or that you think you can separate the good ones from the bad ones.

None of that matters for the simple fact that if you make this choice, I cannot trust you with my safety.

(And when people take issue with you being friendly with cops, *this is why*.)

Puriteens

I think this post is pretty correct in that diagnosis.

That is why fandom spaces become so

harsh
in maintaining their acceptable orthodoxy.

Why it must be liking the right thing the right way.

Why many treat identities also as fandom camps.
Everything must be *correct* and acceptable. Social backlash is harsh.

Kids have no space in which to be free. Online or off. It is constant, consistent vigilance, and taught to be self-vigilant. Not fitting in in whatever environment they are in is punished harshly.

So when they see weird adults being
weird

they freak the fuck out. That cannot be allowed.

They would not be allowed to do that in their spaces, in the environments they are in.

So they are made uncomfortable by that.
So they must make the spaces they are joining feel *safe*

They must make it clean and fit their comfortable acceptability.

The vibes and aesthetics must be *correct*

TLDR they should learn to kill that cop in their heads, and free themselves
