Not sure if this is a bad idea, but I'd like an #NVDA setting to turn off the reading of URLs. Specifically, if something is identified as a URL on the text, it could just say URL, or if we want a bit more specificity, web URL, FTP URL, or whatever. Thoughts? I suppose this might be possible to do with a user ditionary.
Like, this is at the root of *so many* problems. People not believing victims (in the broadest sense of the term)? People not taking disability accommodations seriously? People not adjusting to other people's cognitive needs?
It seems like all of these can almost always be boiled down to "the listener is unable to accept what they are being told as true, because they do not understand it from their own experience".
Probably one of the most ingrained toxic beliefs is that you must fully understand something to (even provisionally) accept it as true, and this is soooo difficult for people to unlearn

I was sort of wrong with the "two people out of thousands" refusing to wear a mask.
Technically, there were several more; this was because, unlike the attendees, the cops watching the protest (from within the crowd) actively refused a mask.

They're apparently aiming for a design which has a 10x cost reduction over conventional machines (2_000 USD instead of 20_000 USD). All released as copy-left open-source hardware!

so I found out about LinkedIn's new AI bullshit fountain from… an unsolicited message from a community head which has replies disabled. their two "articles" they prompted me to "improve" were on the subjects of…
sigh.

I added the following comment on the former out of frustration:

and then shared the image on my LinkedIn feed to talk about the awful messages, only to find out that LinkedIn also doesn't support adding alt text to images. so much for Microsoft's commitment to accessibility.
it's just frustrating because, honestly, I would be less insulted if they just asked for articles to curate inside a list of topics, but that's not what they want. they want us to essentially add comments to an AI-generated high school essay made from automatically generated keyword salad.
quite frankly, the amount of energy required to explain why this is bad only contributes more to the problem. giving it any exposure at all is a net negative. it's effectively technofascism and I don't want any part in it.

COVID policies, and how to make masking work at events
I was reminded of this by another conversation, and figured that it might be helpful to share this with more folks.
In the Netherlands, some time ago, there was a housing protest. It was quite big and crowded, and most of the crowd - from diverse backgrounds, and without them having signed up before - was wearing a mask.
How we achieved that? By simply stationing a couple volunteers at the entrances to the park where the protest started, handing out masks from a big pile.
No further explanation, admonishments, requirements, questions, nothing. Just "here's a mask", one person after another, people didn't even have to stop walking to take it.
It really is that simple. Handing out the masks set a quiet expectation that people would wear them, and most people did. Some refused a mask because they brought their own; some people already put on their own mask as soon as they spotted the hand-outs from a distance.
I recall exactly two people actively refusing to wear a mask. Out of thousands.

#Monktoberfest may not mandate masking, but they've been thoughtful about ventilation and vaccines ... and then there's this!
I feel good about one way masking as a high risk person given all the other work they've put in.
Of note, when GitHub Universe did the rug pull on COVID precautions last year, it was Monktoberfest's written promise to not relax protections after they're announced that inspired a key part of the @phpledge.

imagine, if you will, that you're using some new editor software. you're working your way through it and picking up the pace. then suddenly, instead of clicking a button, you click on a panel's border, and in your mouse flick, you have dragged that border a dozen or so pixels. you didn't know you could do that, all the ui rearranged. the worst part, there's no undo, you can't eyeball the "exact" position it's was at, now you must live knowing your ui has been permanently tainted and can happen further at any point. it is only natural to despair
