To be honest with you, I'm actually very tired of talking about racism on fedi. I am! Believe it or not, I am.
You know, I have other things I could talk about. I could talk about education or mental health, which is actually my field of expertise. Or I could talk about BG3 or Wheel of Time like all the other fantasy nerds. I do have interests, I'm not just some fucking discourse machine here!
That's actually, like, what I came on this space to do, you know? Have fun hanging out and talking to people who share some of my interests or relate to me???
But my attempted fun time keeps being interrupted by bullshit all the way from microaggressions to stalking (some of you, by the way, are very... shall we say, unwell? yeah) and ANYWAY.
It's very frustrating because I can't hardly turn around on here without some asshole reciting talking points you could have found in Derailing for Dummies over 10 years ago.
Our Anti-White Grievance of the Day today is (get your white supremacist bingo cards ready, folks)........APPROPRIATION!
And just in case you're going to pretend you don't believe me, I'll give you a previous example and the current example. For the ones that need their hands held.
Our previous example is the word "woke". Woke originated with AAVE some time ago and more recently, in the past several years, has been distorted into almost unrecognizability as an anti-black dogwhistle. How did this happen, you may ask? Why, it's not complicated at all: the covert racists found out a word Black people were using and copied it! Now, similarly to how these instances of racist telephone typically go, they took the word but lost some of the nuance from the term. This led to them frequently misusing it publicly. And once that had started happening, why there was nothing for it but for the overt racists to go ahead and coopt it from the covert racists (who they are obsessed with, by the way) so they could have their dogwhistle term du jour (politically correct was starting to wear out). This dogwhistle, mind you, has very little to do with its original usage, but of course they can't tell the difference so they don't care. And so we can see how this was an example of appropriation.
Our more recent example of this phenomenon is none other than the nasty little number lots of you are tossing about right now, fedi HOA. I'm not the first person to point this out of course, but since when have white people bothered listening the first time? For 10 ally points, can anyone in the class tell me the history of homeowner's associations, housing, and white supremacy? Anyone? Well, in case you don't know, feel free to look it up. Throw in redlining, the wealth gap, and the GI bill while you're at it. Those who do so or are already aware, you can understand why a lot of Black folks who tried fedi have spoken about the feeling of HOA-style treatment they received. Some of you were even the ones doing it! And now, in EXACTLY THE SAME WAY AS THE PREVIOUS EXAMPLE, several of you white fedizens started to use the term fedi HOA. Only it's not quite the same thing when you all use it. Lost a bit of nuance, hasn't it? You're not actually talking about a historical comparison of systematic racial discrimination in physical space to systematic racial discrimination in digital space, are you? No, you're using it to mean that Black people and people of color are creating and enforcing boundaries that you don't like.
So, you can understand why that's not the same thing, right? Some of the nuance got lost in the shuffle? Now, can someone tell me (for 50 ally points this time!) why that's bad? Can anyone identify how appropriation enabled antiblack discrimination in both cases? Anyone at all? How about how abusive it is to get this aggressive over someone else's boundaries? No? Yes?
Great. Well, at least you learned something.

I know that this is difficult for white folks to hear, but so many of you are doing it right now, that I need to call attention to it.
In self care, there is the maxim that if something is too overwhelming for you, you don't have to press yourself to do better or challenge yourself to learn more regardless. The pushing beyond comfort is seen as toxic or potentially abusive. And I get and agree that that is true, in some cases.
But, white supremacy co-opts that maxim and gives you the same way out of actually learning to be anti racist. So in self care, white supremacy gives you an excuse to not learn to be just or fair, to not confront and dismantle your own bigotry.
I have seen an inordinate number of white people from last week's meltdown about TheBadSpace and related topics, now finally coming down from the white fragility/aggression festival doing the "I'm just so tired and overwhelmed to do anything about all the bullshit excesses of my own privilege that I shoveled at BIPOC all last week to do anything to make real change or justice or amends making happen! Black people are scary!"
In fact, this is one way white supremacy self-reinforces. It wants you to be too overwhelmed to do the work of dismantling it.
White supremacy is why you're letting it be too overwhelming.

this always happens. i can only speak as a black woman. but i imagine it can be extrapolated to other identities.
antiblack racism comes up in very white spaces
white folk as a collective either clutch pearls and stay quiet whispering amongst themselves or lash out

because talking about issues in terms of ‘offence’ and ‘hurt feelings’ buries the actual issues at hand and contributes to this idea of marginalised people as pearl-clutching crybabies, I would STRONGLY suggest people don’t cede to this kind of language and positioning
refusing to budge from the root of the problem makes it less easily dismissible to others, and helps prevent you from being sidetracked into defending a nothing position
Despite the stressful day, I *have* managed to get a bunch of chores done - sorting out my pile of workshop stuff, planting a couple flowers, tidying up and botvac'ing the bedroom, some administrative stuff...

Hair is an important part of black culture. We switch it up a lot because that's what's necessary to take care of our type of hair and we value experimenting with different styles. Just say it looks nice. The discomfort of going into work the next day with a different hairstyle cause you know you're gonna get weird backhanded compliments is immense 😩

It's really frustrating that whenever I try to take a day off Stuff, I end up spending sometimes hours responding to people trying to ping me, just to tell them that I am having a day off, and by the time things finally quiet down, half the day is already over
Because I need the notification icon to go away, but I also need my Matrix client open, and it distracts me not just for the initial message but also for every follow-up question and "OK" etc. afterwards, and Element doesn't provide any granular notification controls, and it takes me a large amount of time to refocus on what I actually *want* to do, and it *also* doesn't have a reasonable way for me to mark myself as "do not disturb"
And like, none of the individual people pinging me are at fault for this, but with all of them together it becomes an exhausting and unmanageable deluge of notifications, and the tech is just Not. Fucking. Working. For. Me.

PSA for those of you feeling like you're coming down with something since it's happening a lot right now: CDC data for last week indicated that only 0.7% of samples tested for influenza came up positive, so if it's between covid and flu you almost certainly have covid. This is helpful to know because it means you can try to get on paxlovid as soon as possible and significantly reduce your odds of complications

tram 2125 rijdt met reclame voor werken bij de gemeente Barendrecht. Barendrecht is een van de grootste clusterfucks in de gemeentepolitieke geschiedenis van Nederland.
Sinds 2014 is de partij Echt Voor Barendrecht (EVB) de grootste partij in de gemeenteraad van Barendrecht. De grote leider van EVB is Lennart van der Linden, die ook een tijd senator en partijbestuurder is geweest van FvD (tot het Baudetreferendum van najaar 2020) en JA21. De partij wordt door alle andere politieke partijen behoorlijk gehaat. Dusdanig dat na de verkiezingen van 2018 alle andere partijen in Barendrecht een coalitie vormden om niet met EVB samen te werken. In 2022 haalde EVB een absolute meerderheid in de gemeenteraad. De eerste actie van EVB was het staken van de ambtelijke samenwerking met Ridderkerk en Albrandswaard. Barendrecht moet daardoor een volledig nieuwe gemeenteorganisatie opbouwen en miljoenen compensatie betalen aan hun buurgemeentes. Het is dan ook vrij belachelijk om nu een tram te zien die reclame maakt voor deze geldverslindende machtsopwelling.
