If the thing you’re making wouldn’t exist if people had to opt in instead of having to opt out, maybe the thing you’re making shouldn’t exist.
the instruction "leave meat to rest after cooking" was invented by pets to increase their chances
Little tip: in the little meatballs menu (three lil dots) on each post you see on your feed there should be a "filter this post" option. You can use that to yeet that post into the void never to grace your feed again. Very useful when you've seen a post boosted for the umpteenth time and are getting sick of it, or there's an upsetting post that's managing to sneak by your filters
bitching abt the nazi frog
today i'm pissed off at: people using pepe emoji and saying ''it's totally not a nazi thing i swear, the symbol is what you make of it"
it's That Easy to stop using one fucking meme but you're really gonna go to bat for the ugliest fuckin pictures because... what. what value is there in the nazi frog. like actually what. why would you die on this hill
Discussing the British Press, and I'm reminded of the time when I had a moderate amount of celebrity in the UK LGBT community, and the press tried to do a hit piece on me.
Now here's the thing. There's a cheat code, and I'm going to explain what it is:
They will contact you for comment.
If you say nothing, they will publish the piece and say you were offered the chance to comment.
If you tell them to fuck off, they will publish the price and say your response was foul and unprintable.
I did neither of these things. I told them that this piece wasn't journalism. It was ridiculous tittle tattle and represented everything that was wrong with a failing and dying industry more obsessed with clickbait than proper reporting. I asked them if they didn't have proper news to report, and said that they should be ashamed of themselves.
They're basically screwed at that point. "We contacted Ms Brown for comment and she said that this was ridiculous tittle tattle and that the reporter should be ashamed of herself."
They're not gonna say that.
I'm struck by something one of my history teachers once said about medieval castles. They weren't meant to be impregnable. They were meant to be annoying enough that an invading army would decide to investigate other priorities instead.
The piece never ran.
If you're a trans person in the crosshairs of the British press, make yourself an annoying target. They're on a deadline, and if you make them conclude that life is too short, they will leave you the fuck alone.
Hello tech bros a reminder that dark mode gives some people with certain kinds of astigmatism (me) eye strain and headaches and so no it's not always "the accessible option"
Test your software on light mode please
If the icons on your buttons are now white on a white background because you never did this, you made an app that I can't use
@ticky The NTP server knows what time it is, because it knows what time it isn't. By subtracting the time it knows from the time it isn't, or the time it isn't from the time it knows, whichever is greater, it calculates a difference, or time deviation. The synchronization subsystem uses these deviations to generate corrective adjustments to move the server from a time where it is to a time where it isn't, and upon arriving at a time where it wasn't, it now is.
If you'd like to contribute to #OpenStreetMap but feel lost and unsure where to begin, I can recommend getting StreetComplete, which turns filling out OSM data fields into a game of completing quests in your local area. You'll get questions like "What's the road surface here?" or "What are the opening times for this shop?" or "What's the house number of this house?" and can just go there and check and then answer. Very convenient for me who don't understand GIS and OSM!
Furthermore, I encourage any FOSS projects who have accounts on fosstodon.org to either move to an instance of their own where feasible or move to a better FOSS oriented instance.
The FOSS community at large deserves better than what fossotodon.org can deliver.
Like do you really want your FOSS project's account on a instance where the admin behaves like *that*? or where it is policy that all posting must be in English.
Last time I checked, FOSS is supposed to be for everyone, not just people who speak English.
Clarification edit - FOSS stands for Free and Open Source Software.
