I am *SO* sick of joining #Discord Servers for everything and anything.

I do NOT want to join your server of 400+ people I *do not know* and have no desire to talk to because you wouldn't link me your GitHub or site directly or put necessary information in your README for a thing I just want to download and use.

Please, for the love of Celestia STOP doing this. IF your server gets deleted, that information is GONE. If Discord shuts down, that information is GONE. If someone doesn't want to join a 400+ person chat room, they're SCREWED. PLEASE STOP.

You people know that there are limits to the number of servers people can JOIN right?!

Sweet Luna's Moon! Seriously, just make an RSS Feed..! Put up an info page on GitHub Pages, it's FREE.

I miss forums you could browse without an account :fluttersad:

Please... please... #StopDiscordCentralization

I'm open to being wrong, but for my money, "identify as"/"identifies as" is almost always a useless phrase.

"She identifies as a woman" => "She is a woman."

"They identify as Catholic." => "They are Catholic."

And so forth. The only utility I can see is to distance the act of identification from actual belonging (as in the classic journalistic twist, "Name Lastname, who identifies as non-binary, [proceeds to misgender them]"), or to discuss the fallibility of survey results ("well, 50% of the cohort identified as sanitation workers, but it's possibly because you said 'garbage people' instead").

In my opinion, it's just not a phrase you should use, unless you can articulate why a simple "is" or "are" doesn't work.

the time you take to tell me that an instance of Firefox is already running and not responding could be much better spent closing Firefox like I told you to five seconds ago and opening a new instance of it, like I told you two seconds ago

I'm so frustrated with how propaganda is fueling the belief that (the majority of) people are fundamentally terrible and untrustworthy, but it's *so difficult* to explain why this is not the case and how it's a product of propaganda, and *so easy* to run up against people's trauma in trying to do so

And it's a self-reinforcing thing where that beliefs keeps oppression alive, and I fucking hate it, and ugh

You can tell when a security person falls into this category because they constantly focus on making things impossible in an absolutist, technical sense, and never talk about motivations and reasons for people to do things

Consider: the majority of critical physical infrastructure of modern-day society could be disrupted trivially, and with very little risk of consequences.

There are vast swathes of unguarded infrastructure that could be attacked without anyone being there to spot you, or having any real way to track you down. Nobody would notice until it were too late.

And yet, we don't have critical infrastructure being torn down every hour of the day. Why? How can you possibly draw any useful conclusions about security and threat modelling if you can't answer this very basic (yet deceptively complex) question?

(And you'd be unpleasantly surprised by how many people who work in security professionally, *can't* answer this question)

Show thread

And like, if you work in security and you don't have at least a credible answer to this, what the fuck are you even doing

Show thread

Security people (digital, physical, or otherwise) really need to ask themselves why vast quantities of trivially vulnerable systems are not being taken advantage of, and what that should mean for their threat modelling process

Academics, particularly in Europe: please PLEASE tell your advisees to check with someone before they submit a CV for an academic position with a photo on it. I know Europass has a photo place, but in some countries (or some institutions) CVs with photos must be automatically rejected to reduce bias in hiring. If the advert says "no photo", tell them not to submit a photo anyway! It could lead to an automatic reject.

Also, consider having a "no photo" rule in your hiring.

There’s a reason why ableism is last in line in the culture wars! Because it forces us to accept that humans have worth outside The Economy & judging humans according to their ability to keep up with the treadmill of capital is immoral. We have not yet accepted this. Even die hard feminists or anti racists etc will eventually dismiss the concerns of friends who can’t keep up, many of us who’ve dealt with serious illness know this. Covid forced ableism’s hand and ableism won

And even if you can agree intellectually that profits before people is problematic, it still takes courage and community to begin to fight back and start questioning the crowd of intellectuals, journalists, and politicians who occupy and rubber stamp the left edge of modern capitalism. They have a hegemonic hold over the brains of many of our friends

Because to question mainstream covid myths as a body you have to question everything about what’s driving modern society and most people are just not prepared to do that. Most people just have not yet gotten to a point where they can see that it is capitalism itself that runs the society and sacrifices human health to keep itself going. Half a century of perpetual red baiting has worked.

a big reason covid misinfo has been so successful imo is that most people simply believe in capitalism.

to understand, let alone question, why covid misinfo is so readily promulgated by mainstream Democrats and their media, you have to understand that regardless of where this set lands on culture wars, they are fundamentally faithful to the current capitalist order.

if you accept the implicit hierarchy of capital, all the Covid myths make sense because they serve that order

my flatmate always runs to the kitchen whenever they hear the noise of a food tin can opening its so cute

Stop pointing out logic holes in fascist and conservative action and ideology. It's a waste of time.

These political movements aren't concerned with solving problems, with intellectual honesty or with logical consistency. They're about building and maintaining power. Anything that keeps the privileged in-group in control and makes marginalized groups more malleable is good and desirable in their world view.

dear furry artists: please caption your work. in addition to making your work accessible to people using screen readers, you'll get more boosts and more views if you do.

I'm going to start a non-profit foundation to fix the fediverse (unplug all the too-big open-sign-up instances). It'll be called uh.... ITBFTN (Instance Too Big, Fuck That Noise)
