Today in #SurveillanceCapitalism I went to acquire snacks and there were two of these #DOOH #DigitalSignage screens at the entrance. That circle at the top is a camera, I think.

The *really weird* thing is that it served me an ad for a Google Pixel as I approached it. It *was* serving a Bendigo Bank ad. There are no signs anywhere stating if this is using facial rec or beacons or other #AdTech. I am curious if it's doing age / gender classification from the camera.

Would love to see what my #FlipperZero can make of this.

Much was written about the Web Integrity API proposal (https://github.com/RupertBenWiser/Web-Environment-Integrity/blob/main/explainer.md) already. It's a thinly veiled attempt at forcing all devices to become commodities, where adblocking and any user modifications that go against what Google prefers would be banned.

The social aspect is really interesting here though. The proposal was presented as if emanating from four individual engineers who just happen to work at Google. Published to their private github. It's only when issues are raised where additional Googlers descend, reminding everyone that concerns need to be raised civilly and in a way Google accepts, otherwise any dissenting voices would be banned. This clearly shows some of the issues with encroaching privatization of public space where soon enough only those savvy, interested or educated enough will have the privilege of using a parallel unfiltered internet.

And all of that is done not in the name of progress, social cohesion or any ideals, but to just sell some more mediocre ads.

Thinking I might have a skin infection on my arm after picking at a tiny blister-like pimple a few days ago. Several people have told me I should go get it checked to be safe. I don't have the money to go to urgent care but if this is what I think it could be, it could become sepsis if I wait. Base price for being seen is $175. I have $132, and needing to use some of that for house supplies.

I love my job, but I do find it frustrating how much of my job consists of repeatedly arguing obvious stuff like "phrenology is bad even if a computer does it" and "using probabilistic lossily-compressed text databases to guess next words is not sentience" and "understanding Merkle trees does not guarantee you'll make tons of money in speculative trading of unregulated currencies" to students and peers and occasionally university administrators.

There is no honor in making others struggle solely because you did. Persevering through difficulty is worth celebrating, but is often worth even more if you can lessen the burden for those who come after you, especially those less fortunate, less privileged. That way lies glory.

to give some examples from the Steam developer forum I've shared recently:

"halo's developers should not be allowed to post 'happy disability pride month' or acknowledge that black people exist in their news feed"

"valve should not be allowed to ban my game for plagiarism if I submit it for review without plagiarized assets and then add the copyright-laundered computer-'generated' art after the review is done"

(these were both real suggestions from real game developers who even doubled down when it was pointed out that what they said didn't make any sense!)
