re: Moderating instances with hate speech

@welshpixie I'm collecting known issues here, just so nobody forgets: mew.toot.cat/mw/Meta_Threads/i

I suspect quite a few of you might be keen on open-source 😀

Unfortunately, #opensource has a funding problem, and so a lot of people struggle to find time to commit to their projects.

In many regions though (esp the EU) there is money available to fund you doing open source full time! Particularly in a few different areas related to what the EU is calling "Next Generation Internet" (#NGI) tech.

All these are open for applicants either right now or imminently:

Me: It's an emergency so we'd better slow down enough to learn that systems thinking stuff and practice that equity and justice stuff.

Many, many, many people: 🚨🚨🚨OMG there isn't time to learn all this systems thinking stuff, or time to grapple with all this equity and justice stuff. Don't you know we are in an emergency?🚨🚨🚨

Me: Have you ever inquired into the source of the emergency though?

@KayOhtie pointed out the site threads.com/ which has a very funny sticker on their site (first image). i've made a version for fediverse admins to use on their instances if they wish, free to use

Maybe we should start making lists of supposedly "respectable" developers who are involved in promoting stuff like blockchains and LLMs, actually - right now it's way too easy for techbros to do a lot of damage by jumping on hype bandwagons, and then delete all the evidence once the hype dies out so that it looks like they had nothing to do with it

And it certainly always seems to be the same people

Refugee crisis, institutionalized xenophobia

Though still controversial, new #EU laws that escalate border violence are under serious consideration by the so called 'left-wing' parties in the government of #Germany.

These policies would seriously undermine the rights of #refugees and basically open the door for imprisoning them.

Be in solidarity with people fleeing war and poverty, even if society at large is determined to let them suffer.

As an archivist I am begging, crying, pleading with everyone to put a date on literally anything you ever create no matter how benign. This brought to you by encountering a “third edition” of a state government authored publication with no date to be found anywhere on it.

Facebook's Threads app, transphobia, fediverse

An infamous transphobic campaigner is on Facebook's new Threads site. Many masto/fedi admits are “wait & see”-ing. If this stays up, that should tell us everythign we need to know about FB's/Thread's moderation policies.

The LVM part of my 'system query API' project now lives in its own separate module, and works!

Summary of recent Red Hat nonsense, long

Disclaimer: I have no insider knowledge here and am just explaining the situation as I understand it from my own research

First some background. In late 2020 Red Hat effectively killed CentOS, which was a free to use version of RHEL that started as an independent project but was adopted by Red Hat in 2014. CentOS was useful because it had full compatibility with RHEL, so a user wishing to run software that targeted a specific RHEL version knew that software would work as intended on the equivalent free CentOS version.

To fill the gap left by CentOS, several projects popped up in the intervening years to produce an equivalent product. The two main ones being Rocky Linux and AlmaLinux. These new distros operated by downloading the freely available RHEL source code, patching out any Red Hat branding, building the packages and ISOs, and distributing them. All of which they are entitled to do under the terms of the GPL.

What has changed in the past couple of weeks is Red Hat has decided to stop freely providing their sources to everyone, and instead only provide them to paying customers. This is explicitly allowed under the GPL, and if that was the extent of what they did this would be a non-story. What is notable is that they have also adopted a policy that any RHEL custom caught "leaking" source code will have their support contract terminated and will no longer receive updates. This also does not violate the letter of the GPL but very much violates the spirit of the GPL. Red Hat has justified this decision stating that releasing source as they had been "no longer provides value to the company".

What the ultimate effect of this change will be is yet to be seen. Rocky and Alma say they have plans to continue to operate, acquiring RHEL source through alternative methods.

Personally, I see this as one more reason to not use or depend on corporate backed software and instead prefer community run projects.

The PFAS Cover-up, about DuPont's long history of polluting the environment and harming people: youtube.com/watch?v=y3kzHc-eV8

(CW: references to suicide, some ableism, footage of needles and animal testing, possibly more things, haven't watched to the end yet)

There are several games I want to play right now, so I'm going to sit here playing none of them

Actually, let's just ban two-stroke engines in their entirety, if you really need something gas-powered you can buy something that isn't an act of environmental terrorism

Edited to update: BlackQueerLife instance now has a properly-set-up channel for receiving money contributions. If you wanted the Fediverse to be more welcoming to Black people, it's one practical way to help :-)

New instance for Black queer people:

I have a bunch of clothes that I want to get rid of - either giving them away or selling them for a few dollars each. They're femme coded, plus sizes. Mostly tops, a few skirts, and a few dresses.

I'd love to give them to other trans people who either can't get clothes, or who want a few things to experiment with while working out their gender before buying clothes.

I'd like to put them on a site with a picture, sizing info, material info, etc so that I can post the link to all the items and people can contact me with questions and requests.

Does anyone have an idea about a site I could use for this sort of thing? Something that's easy to use (and free).
