Me: shoveling endless piles of stinky useless garbage into your home via the living room window
You, shouting: "Aggghhh stop!! Why!! What are you doing!! I don't want this!!"
Me, shouting back as I continue to hurl shovels of shit through your window: "That's right! We have different opinions! Healthy debate! This is democracy in action!!"
Moderating instances with hate speech
Who's shown up on Threads so far:
Libs Of TikTok
Gays Against Groomers
(see https://artisan.chat/@silverseams/110667684777788597)
Gary Vaynerchuk (actually in a convo with Zuck https://social.pixie.town/@joepie91/110668293064374435)
So, that's three strikes for unmoderated hate speech and misogyny - if it were any other instance, would you, an instance admin, block them at this point?
Welp. Someone found a small regression in librsvg. That bit of code has 100% test coverage, and 100% branch coverage (eyeballed; rustc doesn't emit that yet). But the interactions between the possible values of the objects which the code is handling... are handled wrong.
An easy fix, and I'm adding a few tests, but it gets me thinking.
See, this is what I mean with actually getting useful answers to my weird-ass technical questions on fedi :p
(This is less an "I don't understand it" and more an "I can't quite build up a coherent-enough mental model to write a maximally-simple implementation, and maybe different framings will help")
threads, mysogynist figure
Ah yes, let's "wait and see where #Threads goes". Certainly a hopeful sign that *checks notes* fucking Vaynerchuk, notable manosphere asshole, is idly chatting away with Zuck
Stop Trying to Make Social Networks Succeed.
"Social networks are fluid. They come, they go. For commercial social networks, the success is defined by: "do they earn enough money to make investors happy ?" There’s no metric of success for non-commercial ones. They simply exist as long as at least two users are using them to communicate. Which is why criticisms like "Mastodon could never raise enough money" or "the Fediverse will never succeed" totally miss the point."

This is a fun time.
For all of their resources and political clout, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, and Reddit are adjusting to us.
The inexplicable rise of the fediverse as an independent player has the Big Tech spots scared. They see the shift that is happening and are scrambling to adapt.
They'll do what corporations do to protect their interests: put out mediocre products and lean on their brand recognition to re-capture people into their ecosystems because they have the resources to wait out the hard times.
But we're here, and we are not burdened by the decision-making of people that are out of touch about what makes the web a great place. We have the ability to build and adapt faster and leaner, responding to the needs of various communities in real-time.
This is the space where real innovation happens. This is the space where we make huge jumps forward into the realm of what is possible instead of settling for what is.
This is going to be exciting.
Badly designed research that pays, racism, transphobia, long post
Okay this is going to sound sort of weird: if you're interested in making a small amount of money *and* telling off researchers doing a bad job with their trans rights and racism research, I highly suggest applying to Prolific Research coming up.
Prolific's a hub for academic researchers who pay out for surveys, and most are fine. Logic puzzles, reviewing bad ads, making fun of cryptocurrency biz bros. But there's a *lot* of badly designed trans rights and racism related research going on right now that needs more folks with the spoons to say "how on earth was this approved." (Sheesh, even the number of "'transgender' is not a standalone gender please stop" messages I've sent is too many.)
Yes, these universities should then properly pay for your time as a consultant, I'm not remotely arguing that. I'm saying that it pays out quickly and this research is happening now whether we like it or not. And some of you could probably do research on this research.
In the process of moving to @joepie91. This account will stay active for the foreseeable future! But please also follow the other one.

Strong views about abolishing oppression, hierarchy, agency, and self-governance - but I also trust people by default and give them room to grow, unless they give me reason not to. That all also applies to technology and how it's built.
