Heard some rumblings about Meta having NDA'd meetings with some fedi admins.

GoToSocial will investigate automated blocking of Meta instances, as soon as we know more about what they're planning and what their software looks like.

Fuck Meta, they've caused more than enough harm elsewhere without wading into this place too; and fuck folks who are meeting with them in secret instead of simply and unambiguously telling them to fuck off.

Don't let those pieces of shit get a foothold here.

(Cue concern trolling and accusations of overreaction + elitism in 3, 2, ...)

The "Meta people have been awesome" bit is especially on brand for them. Meta in particular is really good at putting True Believers in front of open source and community engagement stuff until the target demographic is ready to be wholesale consumed.

In this case I can guarantee that the people the big admins are talking to really believe that Meta is going to do right by the fediverse and that's really sad.

If you run an instance and meet with #Meta about the #fediverse under an NDA, your words on the subject cannot be trusted and you deserve every bit of flack that comes your way.

NDAs in this context require you to deceive your community at the direction of one of the most profitable companies in the world.

If that seems fine to you, you have no business running a community.

Apparently big fedi admins have met with meta under NDA and can I just say...

Dude also seemed to be one of the people who met with Meta/Facebook under NDA: universeodon.com/@supernovae/1

fediblock

After repeated incidents with replyguys, full-text search, and now this shit, I think it's well beyond time to call for a of universeodon.com:

Apparently instances aren't "legit" unless they're a "business", according to this guy.

Everybody: One of the best things about the fediverse is we're not the product any more!

Annoyed that almost every time I boost queer art from this account someone from off-instance reports it, even the non-lewd, no CW needed stuff, like a m/m couple almost-kissing.

So, please show me all of your queer art for me to boost the almighty heck out of it. :bowie_stardust:

Tomorrow I will finally have a functioning dishwasher again \o/

while numerous humble fediverse admins are signing The Anti-Meta Pact

it seems some untold number of high-profile ones have signed the opposite

The anti-Meta fedi pact continues to grow, with more and more instance admins pledging to block any Facebook/Meta instances! fedipact.online/

If you run a fedi instance, consider signing it too: cryptpad.fr/form/#/2/form/view

with the threat of meta's project92 looming on the horizon

i've created the ANTI-META ADMIN PACT

please sign if you're an admin/mod on a fedi instance

who has the ability and authority to defederate

and you pledge to do so when meta inevitably bursts onto the scene

And I really hate it when people do this, because it ends up demotivating a lot of people from even trying - they just *believe* these absolutist statements, and now it definitely won't be possible because nobody even attempts it anymore

Show thread

That's not to say that there aren't things that are *literally* impossible, of course. But like, you do at least need to be able to explain *why* it is impossible, what the fundamental barrier is? And not just assume it based on observed results?

Show thread

Something that continues to baffle me is how many people will draw conclusions about whether something is *possible*, purely based on whether it has succeeded so far - without any attempt at understanding *why* something has succeeded or failed before, and whether that might be possible to change by changing the circumstances.

And like, this is not just a neurotypical thing. I see plenty of ND folks do this just as much. And the conclusions are always super absolutist - not "I don't see how to make this work", but straight-up "this is clearly not possible at all".
