Raspberry Pi Foundation seems to be collecting serial numbers/MAC addresses during the first boot of Raspberry Pi OS?
Take a look at the following function inside `piwiz`, their first boot wizard:
https://github.com/raspberrypi-ui/piwiz/blob/master/src/piwiz.c#L2381-L2393
That app either reads the OTP registers 64-65 which contain the MAC address, or the serial number reported by CPU. Then, they use Chromium first_run_tabs preference key to send a SHA256-hashed MAC/SN to their server (hxxps://welcome.raspberrypi.org/raspberry-pi-os?id=SHA256SN)
What's going on with #NixOS right now is a good example of why having sponsors doesn't mean you have an infinite budget.
Once the sponsor pulls out - and they eventually will! - it's always the community that's left to pick up the pieces, and so you have an obligation to ensure that the funding burden is minimal.
also it's fucking 2023 why on earth am I getting union emails sent to an inbox that is owned both by the bosses and by google. why doesn't every union sign up process include an invitation to a freaking CHATROOM. for the love of god it is the most obvious thing on the planet to put you in CONTACT with the other members of your union on a person-to-person basis rather than funnelling everything through stewards and blast emails that no one reads.
garbage infra has freaking consequences!!!!! and they are labor organizing burnout!!!!
Pride in 1969 was stenen gooien. Pride in 2023 is feestvieren.
Misschien moeten we toch maar weer eens stenen gaan gooien?
aippropriation (noun):
Appropriating the work of artists, writers, coders, and other creative folk, or creative output of whole communities, or a corpus of whole languages, by including it indiscriminately into training sets for generative AI models, and benefiting from them by those controlling these models, usually without consent, remuneration, attribution, acknowledgement, nor making these tools freely available to those creatives, communities, or language speakers.

Labor organising, bad news, US politics
This is extremely bad news. Basically, the US supreme court decided that unions can be held accountable for damages caused by strikes. This means that strikes become somewhat useless, since the whole idea is to inflict losses to demonstrate the importance of the workers for the company.
It's also extremely disappointing that the purportedly progressive judge Sotomayor appears to have sided with the company suing the union in this case.
Union power was one of the few remaining remedies we still had to the rule of the wealthy, so it's not a surprise that moneyed interests are trying to break it.

In practical terms LLMs turn out to be a kind of idea reinforcement device. The more often an idea is expressed in the corpus, the more likely it is to be expressed by the model.
"Stochastic parrot" is a good shorthand, but parrots repeat verbatim. LLMs are more like a convert, something indoctrinated. Like a wind-up evangelist.

Reddit is experiencing the VC dilemma.... Your startup is allowed to have core features and limited growth, and the end user experience is generally better that way in the long term...
VCs require infinite growth and that's unsustainable, so once the users run out.. they look to find cash any way they can like the privatisation of the APIs.
Patreon had the same problem. It had one job, then it suddenly started posting about microloans.
VC money, not even once.
