Just a reminder to those that need to hear it...

Neo Nazism is an ideology, not a skin color. Non-white folks can be Neo-Nazis just like women can be misogynists. If a Latino guy has a SS tattoo... He's a Nazi! If a south Asian American has a Nazi flag in a U-Haul...He's a Nazi!

Oh hey! I just had my first social media post to be taken down from any platform ever, on LinkedIn. Yay! My post about the flabbergasting amounts of racism in "AI" violated their "professional" community guideline. Indeed. Its quite professional to be as racist as possible, but not professional to call it out. Totally makes sense.

New update to @apps allows you to turn on media descriptions as required element to publish a post!

It's off by default, so be sure to turn it on

I saw a post earlier that basically said "the software development world absolutely has its own version of antivaxxers" and this feels like it just further confirms it

Like, how could a belief that is so obviously false once you actually reason through it ("ESM is viable for direct use in the browser"), and so frequently disproven by people still using build tools in practice... still become canonically accepted as true?

(See gist.github.com/joepie91/bca2f for the details)

Like, can this fucking myth of "ESM works in the browser" please die already, I am so so tired of it

I swear, if I have to explain one more time to people that a JS module system cannot actually break the laws of physics for network latency and magically make browser module loading work...

@DJDarren @notjustbikes

calling these things "tanks" is not fair to the tank. An M1 tank driver has better forward visibility than the driver of many full-size pickup trucks

The entire foundation of this field is the most racist shit I've ever seen. The more I learn the more bizarre it gets. And your favorites, OpenAI + co. are most influenced by, you guessed it, Nick Bostrom. "Altman has written about the influence Nick Bostrom...the "father" of longtermist thought, has had on him and his work": lnkd.in/gsVwrpJM

So, the other "godfather" of AI, Turing Award Winner Yoshua Bengio has decided to FULLY align himself with the #TESCREAL bundle, writing a thing about "rogue AI" and prominently citing people like Nick Bostrom.

Take a good look at this text here. This is written by non other than Nick Bostrom, prominently featured by so many of these fathers and godfathers and sons and brothers and nephews of "AI" (given that its all men you know).

Definitely getting to the point where I'll be putting word filters up again. :aliceweh:

I don't wanna be "blind" to the shit that's happening to #trans folks lately. I just can't take that being boosted onto my timeline every time I open up fedi. I'm genuinely begging you to CW. You're making fedi inhospitable to the folks you're trying to rally for.

The real takeaway from the #Twitter bug restoring deleted tweets should be in recognizing that those tweets were never actually deleted

In fairness this one isn't really the landlord's *fault* either, it's actually a decent fire alarm from a reputable brand, probably just got unlucky - but why the hell doesn't it have a "shut up, you're broken" button?

Ah, just saw that #CPDPconference #CPDP2023 is happening this week so here’s your yearly reminder that this “privacy” conference is sponsored by Meta, Google, TikTok, etc.

In other words, it is bullshit.

Shame on those who continue to legitimise it by attending and speaking at it.

Guess the landlord (whose fire alarm it is) gets to keep both pieces

Today's project: defusing the neighbours' fire alarm, which was apparently going off erroneously all night, and is one of those "battery soldered to the board" units

"Ever since the EU decided cookiewalls are the best things ever"

You don't even need a cookiewall unless you're doing unnecessary things, sending data to third parties and things like that.
It's those websites that have decided it's the best solution.

Hate to defend the EU but requiring consent to collect data, give it to others, track you etc, is not unreasonable at all, and you can just not do that.

Please boost, this is really important, I'm desperate. Asking for advices about epilepsy. Mention of phobia and depression

Epileptic folks, do you have any tips to avoid falling outside please?

I can sometimes feel the seizure coming, up to 10s before it starts. I try to sit at least or lay down, but I usually don't have time.

I'm afraid to go out since Friday, just like when I was extremely depressed and when I was dealing with social phobia... I'm so afraid to fall back into this...

politics, "tragedy of the commons", meta

I'm increasingly believing that the so-called "tragedy of the commons" has very little to do with "widespread abuse of the commons out of ignorance", and is really just a proxy for "primarily centrists widely excusing away otherwise-manageable abuse of the commons by a select few"

And this belief is really only being further reinforced by how people are talking about "giving Meta a chance on the fediverse"

To UK academics (students and staff).

⚠ If you're offered work marking in the next months, please say no!

It's likely an attempt to break our marking and assessment boycott, our most effective industrial action to avoid threatened pay cuts.

Please boost if you have UK followers.
