friend i am very sorry to inform you that i can in fact see you behind that branch

If you’re someone who needs to relocate to a different location within the borders of the US but are not comfortable using ground transportation due to the locales through which you’d need to travel, I am willing to help by meeting you at your current location and driving your possessions to your destination while you travel via faster means. I have four weeks of PTO this calendar year and have yet to use more than a handful of days and I cannot think of a single way I could use them better than this.

If you need a hand with this, or know someone who does, please do slide into my DMs and I’ll give you my Signal contact info.

learning the deeply "fuck around and find out"-based history of organic chemistry makes a lot of what's happening with AI make sense to me

if massive compute at scale is "the new oil" might be good to spend more time learning about all the insane poisons and shit that were commercialized (with minimal research into health/environmental effects) to justify the waste production that went into refining oil for gasoline

One thing I super didn't realize until reading "An Engine, Not a Camera" was how heavily regulated US markets were in the mid-20th century. Like... after the Great Depression all derivatives were basically outlawed and considered gambling, and it took decades of lobbying (including paying Milton Friedman to write papers saying it was a good idea) to re-legalize highly leveraged speculative assets that had blown up in the 1920s. And the result was: the 1980s.

Remember when IDA Pro was the industry standard, and then the NSA decided to wreck their business?

Here have some pretties

I was gonna do four to fill the image upload slots but I'm too eepy is bed time zzzz

CC0, do whatever you want with 'em

@crablab Honestly, we need to stop referring to this stuff as AI. It's not AI, it's Predictive Modeling. We should call out the folks who are mislabeling it, because it gives a false impression. People are wowed at the thought of AI. Zeitgeist tells them that the computer can think. Calling it PredMod is awkward, but it takes away that assumption. #newPetPeeve

Once again, a reminder for those of you who scream about "e-begging":

None of us want to constantly solicit for funds, and in a society that actually cared enough for people to pay them livable wages if they work or provide enough to meet their needs if they can't work due to disability or age, there would be no need for #MutualAid.

This society, however, sometimes leaves us no other choice when all other avenues are closed off.

You don't have to like it or even donate, but respect it.

Does anyone know of a -only way to reorder the rows of items in flexbox, such that whichever row contains a specific item, is always the bottom row?

Similar to how on (older?) Windows versions, when you had multiple rows of tabs in a tab control, the bottom-most row would always be the one containing the currently-active tab, reordering the rows if necessary. :boost_requested:

"Scams", 🧵, Addendum

To be clear, this thread is not designed to discourage people from donating from their favorite Fediverse mutual.

If it makes you feel good to donate to someone who asks for it, if you're only doing it because you like this person and it is sort of functioning as a tip, or even if you're "consuming their marginalization", that's okay. These are all very human things in the process of how we choose to distribute resources

My issue is that you can't police people asking because whatever reasons you give are going to open up a can of worms that you're not ready for, and are going to be based in discriminatory prejudices on your part.

If you don't like a begpost, it's nothing to scroll past it. Though you should boost and/or donate 💜🖤

"Scams", 🧵, 1/

Okay so #CupOfTeaSocial, being on their bullshit, have argued that they're creating their rules because of the threat of "scammers" and people "abusing" begposts.

#hachyderm is also on some bullshit but I don't know what argument they're making if any so 🤷‍♀️

People have argued that scams are rare or even nonexistent and that they really shouldn't matter in the grand scheme of things. I agree with that, but let's try another argument out.

Let's say that there are "scammers" and there's a significant amount of them.

What then?

Dear #fediverse, please tag me when you come across #meowlogisms (i.e. cat-inspired wordplay) in any language, like the well-known purrfect or caturday.

I collect these words - for science (#linguistics). Thank you 🐈

tell me you're a misogynist and a nazi without telling me

RMS

I just realized that the role of RMS in FOSS is basically analogous to the "ideas guy" that people always despise in the context of software projects

people who turn their noses up at asking-for-financial-help posts are the same people who don't give change to homeless folks cuz 'you don't know what they're going to spend it on'

in dragon language, humans are called "ositadagonrun" because that's the noise they're most frequently observed making

(this varies from region to region; humans with different plumage seem to have different sets of calls.)
