I’ve just discovered r/BirdsTakingTheTrain, this is amazing

Okay, you all seem energized, so here we go! This time, with feeling!!

The Icculus Microgrant has money to give out! If you have an OPEN SOURCE PROJECT OF ANY SIZE, you are eligible!

Just reply to this toot with your project(s) and I'll put you on the list!

You can nominate other projects, too. You do not have to be American to participate; I send money in lots of currencies around the world!

details: icculus.org/microgrant/

Still can't get over what they've pulled off with a *teacup ride*, of all things: youtube.com/watch?v=KXq6_bHk8B

(This toot brought to you by yet another recent comment on the internet arguing basically exactly that)

Like, if your response to "abolish marketing" is "but then how would I find good stuff", then you REALLY need to do some serious introspection about what exactly you think marketing is or whose rules it is following, and what that means for you

It really boggles my mind how people still cling to the idea that marketing is somehow a necessary component of society, that its purpose is somehow to 'inform you of the best options to solve your problem'

I cannot imagine the gall of these companies forcing remote jobs to be on-site again. There's absolutely no limit to the power that companies will seize if they feel like they have even half a shot of getting away with it.

Like, having a paywalled video is one thing, but fuck off with this sort of bait-and-switch shit

Really not a fan of this recent trend of "the video on YouTube is really just a long teaser for a paywalled video on Nebula"

Welp, I posted about the refusal of service nonsense on the Fairphone forums and all I got was sycophants and bootlickers telling me that ackhsually I'm ridiculous for... not having asked the guy I bought the phone from for proof of purchase?

Because apparently it's "irresponsible" to not make sure you're not buying a stolen phone by asking for a piece of paper with another person's personally identifiable information it?

tbh now I'm *really* soured on Fairphone and I'm going to recommend against dealing with them. Which legitimately sucks, they make the closest-to-ethical phones you can buy, but if you even dare to buy one used they'll refuse to fix your phone unless you have someone else's documents on your hands and you'll be berated by sycophants online.

Bleh. Now I *really* have no idea what phone I should get, I was still gonna get a FP4 before I saw the response but yeah fuck that

#Fairphone just to make this more visible 🥲️

Hint:

Telling people who face oppression, discrimination, and marginalization that things aren't as bad as they think they are is *NOT* helpful.

You are also probably wrong. The people targeted by hate have a better understanding of risk and what their situation is. We fucking live it.

Zo jammer dat er nooit een vervolg op Basta is gekomen... Rambam heeft toch nooit helemaal dezelfde vibe gehad

The thing that drives me nutso about climate change is that many of the necessary changes could be awesome. A society with more leisure time, cleaner air, closer connections to friends and family who live nearer to you, more exercise, more technological innovation, more jobs, more fairness, more nature… most people would benefit from these changes.

It would be nice if the tech folks on here didn't buy into the Tailscale dev marketing like they did into the previous series of "hip tech companies that turned out evil down the line"

Please learn from history, corporations are never your friend, they are *at best* temporarily harmless

If you don't run windows, it's probably a good idea to remove "Microsoft Windows Production PCA 2011" from db, to decrease bootloader attack surface.

If you do run windows, tell MS that they need to revoke (checks notes) um, all of their bootloaders. Wait a second...

prisons, death penalty, politics

Honestly I do not think that any country with 'true' life imprisonment can credibly claim to have abolished the death penalty; life imprisonment is just a death penalty preceded by torture.

the details behind google's page rank algorithm are well documented and all the patents have expired. if you're not trying to sell ads and drive engagement I wonder how hard it would be at this point. I also wonder what a federated/collective search engine might look like. I should be doing other things yet here I am.
