“We’ve deluded ourselves into believing the myth that Capitalism grew from the Protestant ethic of hard work & sacrifice.Capitalism was built on the exploitation & suffering of Black slaves & continues to thrive on the exploitation of the poor – Black & white, here & abroad.” MLK

When machines and computers, profit motives and property rights are considered more important than people, the giant triplets of racism, extreme materialism and militarism are incapable of being conquered.”

And reminder: Rev. Dr. King spoke about American imperialism, capitalist exploitation, and more. He understood that all systems were interconnected.

Reminder: despite white people loving to quote the line from “I Have a Dream” abt individualistic things (judging people), most of the speech was abt systemic racism, incl things that continue to harm now—police violence, housing injustice, voter suppression, insufficient change.

instead of “hey i made this tool”

try, “hey i am thinking of making this tool” first and get opinions before you do the work that you’ll inevitably have to delete bc you didnt ask for opinions

Side note, but I hate how the letter Q has been hijacked by American rightwing conspiracy weirdos. Q used to be our letter, dammit.

I hate how "arcade" has come to mean "children's gambling parlour"

To avoid disappointment, a brief reminder that EMF happens every two years and our next event will be in 2024.

If you're looking for a similar event in 2023, we will be at Chaos Communication Camp in Germany.

The Trolley Problem is that we have roads and cars and we don't have any fucking trolleys.

Oh and they're also almost always loudly Christian, same deal for the "arcade" (ie. childrens' gambling) operators

Possibly my least favourite category on Youtube are the "passive income" videos where white dudes from the US (it's *always* white dudes from the US) happily extoll the virtues of getting filthy rich off running a laundromat with almost no effort.

So I just discovered that KDE Connect will actually automatically mute the music on my PC when my phone rings, and unmute it when the call ends. Neat!

I've seen a couple of "the fediverse is only used by nerds, so it won't survive - it needs the cool kids to arrive" hot takes recently.

I'm not sure the basic principle - that it is only used by nerds today - is correct anyway.

And even if it were, a small group of nerds is more than enough to keep a service running for themselves and their friends. The fediverse has already "survived" for years.

And who says nerds aren't the "cool kids" anyway?! Being nerdy is pretty cool, IMHO.

Why are ethics questions always like:
"is it ethical to steal bread to feed your starving family?"

And not:
"is it ethical to sell bread when families are starving?"
