Angry farmers block highways: 0 arrests.

Violent racists block a highway: 0 arrests.

@extinctionrebellionnl block a highway: 150 arrests.

But noooo, there's no justice equality issue in the Netherlands, they say.

A reminder that most journalists work for corporations and therefore represent those interests in their work, and those interests are in direct opposition to the #workingClass. The work of journalists is never unbiased and is often harmful to your interests. The widespread tendency to treat journalists as sacred, too important for scrutiny (or, say, defederation on Mastodon), is dangerous. Work of journalists should be no more safe from scrutiny or boycott than the corporations they represent.

Ableism, nazi fascism, genocide, mass shootings

I guess I'll address this publicly then, since the person I was going to say it to decided to block us.

Anyone who claims that "mentally sound" people would never commit an atrocity because of bigotry is, frankly, whitewashing history and scapegoating mentally ill people. Being mentally ill yourself does not excuse this.

The Holocaust was not carried out by mentally ill people. It was carried out by average, neurotypical people as a result of radical bigotry.

That wasn't the only instance of horrible atrocities commited by "mentally sound" neurotypical people. It's happened many, many times throughout human history, including to this day. And the Milgram experiment confirmed this: ANYONE has the potential to be lulled into committing horrible atrocities.

The same goes for mass shootings.

Whitewashing atrocities as caused by mental illness is ableist, and dangerous. It tells neurotypical people that they are immune to committing atrocities.

They are not. And it's not OK to scapegoat mentally ill and neurodivergent people just because that fact makes you uncomfortable.

I just can't get over the framing in this article, lmfao

"In short, this announcement means Tumblr would move from being only a niche blogging platform to becoming a part of a larger, decentralized social network of sorts"

Ah yes, accidentally removing an index on a hot path, that'll tank your database performance for sure

Does anyone else struggle with overexplaining? People really don't seem to like it, it makes them upset with me, but I don't know how else to make sure I am interpreted correctly in a situation. Been wildly misinterpreted my whole life. Is there something I can do which isn't not explaining but isn't over-explaining?

ETA: Muting this as it's been a couple days and I can't see any of my other notifications. Thanks for your thoughtful responses

Great news! I've finally fixed my datasheet scraper (and refactored basically the whole thing), so it's actually performant again: metrics.cryto.net/d/M6VEBtLnz/

And so it's now steadily adding new datasheets to the search engine again :) seekseek.org/

Avoid books published by . They are an untrustworthy publisher.

Several years ago, they e-mailed me to ask me to do a technical review of a Hyper-V book. I know nothing about Hyper-V whatsoever. The offered compensation was "two books from their technical library".

Most likely they scatter-mailed anyone their Github scraper turned up, hoping that someone would agree to review. Because I *did* have a HyperVM-related repository, which is completely unrelated to Hyper-V, but would definitely match a 'hyperv' string match.

Even leaving aside the shitty ethics of not paying their reviewers properly, this also means that the average Reddit/HN-posted blogpost will have had more actual technical review than a Packt book. :boostsPorFavor:

@joepie91 My deal was slightly better, THREE books from their library; don’t even remember the subject matter anymore. I wrote a 500 word reply saying hell no and never heard anything.

Too many people are used to centralised social media and websites in general.

Mastodon is like email in the technical sense, but it's more like Minecraft. You can join a server, but you don't have a right to be there. You're asked to follow the rules. If you piss off the admin you'll probably get banned because they don't want you there. Getting banned from one server doesn't mean you can't join another.

That's the Internet. Welcome. Be gay. Have fun.

As #activitypub and the #fediverse is more than just Mastodon, please tell me what other things you're doing? I'd really like to get more involved with the wider #federated universe but have no idea what's out there.

Please Boost so I can hear from everyone!
