@punkthesystem Taxation IS theft but the reasons behind it being so, from an anarchist perspective, are different than they would be from a right-wing libertarian perspective. The right-wing libertarian would say that the government is stealing the money that rightfully belongs to you due to your hard work. The anarchist would say, no, nothing by right belongs to you individually, save that everything belongs to everyone, so everything belongs to you. So the anarchist critique of taxation is far deeper - it's essentially a branch of the phrase property is theft, which is more all-encompassing and more accurate. I therefore don't find it to be a very useful phrase since people will probably assume you mean the right-wing libertarian thing, at least in the US

Eagerly awaiting the day where tech folks can have a discussion about CWs without invoking ableist commentary

"We live in #capitalism. Its power seems inescapable. So did the divine right of kings. Any human power can be resisted and changed by human beings. #Resistance and #change often begin in #art, and very often in our art, the art of words."

twitter complexity vs. fedi complexity, speculation

I wonder if Mastodon gives off the aura of being more complicated than Twitter because we - as in, the folks running things - actually tell you stuff up front

like, let's be real, is "you need to include the full @ with the server name to follow somebody" any more complicated than "you need to be vague about why you're talking about art today because any tweets with the word 'commissions' in them are yeeted into the shadow realm"?

politics, violence, transphobia

I think what's really been increasingly fucking me up for the past week is not that the shooting occurred. It's the mainstream response.

When Pulse happened in 2016, the conversation was the bog standard argument on gun control.

Now, the right wing are openly cheering "do it again, do it again!" and trying to incite copycat attacks while the centrists (there is no left in this conversation) pointedly say nothing.

Things are getting much worse, very fast.

Apparently the next stable NixOS release will be called "Raccoon"

Mastodon Important info

Reasons to defederate from Mastodon.social and Mastodon.online: Eugen would open registrations without consulting or preparing his mod team at the time, after agreeing to keep them closed (this went on over and over after he had promised not to do it again).

He would, in the early days, insist that Mastodon.social was not a flagship instance, and then open a second server, still owned and run by him. (second server is Mastodon.online)

He would promise no algorithms and then create the explore page without input. And the trending hashtags without establishing it with the community.

He surrounds himself with yes sayers, and if you want to stay in his good graces you need to take a fair amount of abuse if you disagree with him.

He would (I have not recent data points on this) throw a disabled partner's, as in business, disability back in their face when not wanting to work with them any more.

The community asked for years for a Mastodon Nonprofit, so we'd be responsible together. He eventually created one with himself as the sole founder, and no other members (as far as I've been able to find.)

All hail the Benevolent Dictator For Life.

(rewrote because some faulty info, but added some stuff I know got sure, as I do not want to give reason to be called a liar.)

nothing stopping us from just calling federation instances "pubs" or "homes" or "neighborhoods" or anything more inviting. particularly to indicate that these are points of entry to a cultural group and that you are picking your moderators. that would be a very good idea.

To those folks proudly affiliated with surveillance capitalists, I say: Read the room. The room exists despite the best efforts of the corporations that employ you. Your affiliation to them affords you no legitimacy here. On the contrary, it’s a mark of shame. So perhaps do not be too proud of it. Perhaps don’t flaunt it. Perhaps approach this space in your capacity as individuals. Perhaps listen. Perhaps try a bit of humility.

Everyone’s gotta eat (although the choice for most privileged folks with in-demand technical skills isn’t between a six figure salary and stock options at a surveillance capitalist or starvation – there are many other types of businesses and organisations) but being proud of perpetuating surveillance capitalism is another thing. Then you’re also doing PR and legitimising them.

If you see a surveillance capitalist affiliation proudly displayed on someone’s profile here on the fediverse, ask “are you proud to work for them and why?” “Do you realise this space exists in reaction to the toxic, exploitative, and extractive spaces created by surveillance capitalists like your employer?”

it's way too common for the linux build of a game to be totally broken but it runs perfectly well in proton

Seeing Big Tech folks jump into the fediverse and – without so much as a “how do you do, fellow kids?” – roll up their sleeves to write the rules, dream up commercial services, and pontificate about how advertising should run on it. 👀

@estrapade @s0 I think IT culture has real issues with implementing things that would help the implementer, without considering its impact on others.

There's a good argument that this mirrors a lot of historical powerful groups with similar attitudes throughout human history.

@alicia Just before I head to sleep, I figured I’d give you another Mastodon explainer to help you orient. 😁

There are 3 timelines on Mastodon: home (people you follow), local (people on your instance) & federated (every toot your instance knows about).

Most apps will let you switch between them.

Whether or not you see a toot is explained in this handy flowchart made by Per Axbom.

Flowchart: Visibility of a tweet

Enough people used my flowchart on the visibility of a toot as a an example of “how complex Mastodon is”, that I just had to make one on the visibility of a tweet.

The visibility of a tweet is always unpredictable. A post on Mastodon appears chronologically in a transparent and predictable way.

Just sayin' 😜
