GtS is getting wicked lots of attention and people keep recommending it to other people despite me waving big red flags saying it's in alpha, and then people say on github or in chat 'why does x not work', and there's only so many times I can say 'it's not implemented yet' before I become fully jokerfied
ok ok, another thing.
"Where are my quote tweets/toots?"
They don't exist here. They're very often used to harass, dogpile, and otherwise cause a bad time for folk. If you want to engage with a toot, reply! If you want others to see it, boost it!
Trust me, it's very freeing to know you can post your personal update without being concerned some arsecandle is going to QT it saying "haha look at this"
meta; capitalism (add.)
Also, just because I remember a post that was like “but no brands means no indie artists!”
Obviously, indie artists are okay. Y’all are amazing. Art is inherently anti-capitalist, and even if you do commissions, it is a much more wholesome and worthwhile endeavor than any modern for-profit company or brand.
When I say “brand”, I mean Starbucks. I mean McDonald’s. I mean those types of brands. Those brands can burn to the fucking ground.
meta; capitalism
Seeing mainstream business media start talking about Mastodon is making me feel like we’re at a tipping point.
Do not let brands and companies into Mastodon except non-profits or indie focused companies like itch.io. If you find one, block them immediately. Do not engage. Alternatively… engage with the most messed up shit ever like furries have been doing for ages.
Make the Fediverse absolutely un-marketable. We cannot let our space be exploited by capitalism.
Every other space on the internet is constantly filled with fury at the outrage of the day
The Scholar Social Local Timeline is not the place for that; current events are explicitly "off topic" for the Local Timeline
This is so that we all have just one (1) place online that isn't just for doomscrolling
So right now, that means that if you want to talk about the US elections and you're on Scholar, use Unlisted privacy setting, or at least a CW
Encountering harassment #FediTips
Unfortunately, it happens here too.
Use the tools and let your #admin help protect you.
• You can Mute, Block, Report a user from their profile page.
• You can also block their domain. If it's not one of the big servers, you should probably go ahead and use defederation as defense and shut it down.
• When you Report a user you'll be asked to choose which of the server rules were violated.
• Admins will be notified and should take action.
• Find a safe instance.
fediverse, beginner's guide
Decided to have a shot at writing a very concise guide to the fediverse, because a lot of the guides are quite long: https://gist.github.com/joepie91/f924e846c24ec7ed82d6d554a7e7c9a8
Hope this is helpful to someone!
Twitter & Musk
WOW. Elon Musk just took a swipe at Mastodon, calling it "Masterbatedon" and making fun of the people here.
A man who just spent $44 BILLION USD is afraid of this service. And he should be. There's no way he can make money off of it.
This is how we take back the internet and our lives, my friends.
Signing up to a new social media site with lots of activity and interactions on your content, making new friends and finding new lovely art, can be a big pull.
Take breaks, stay hydrated, do some focused breathing, remember to take your meds, and take care of yourself.
We'll be here when you get back.
twitter, freenode, activism, positive
I'm really quite happy about how many people are recognizing the similarities between the Freenode implosion and the current Twitter shitshow, and how it's helping to inform people on what to do and expect next.
This was kind of a stretch goal for the Freenode thing from an activist perspective; clearly communicating the power dynamics behind the implosion, so that people could learn from it and prevent/mitigate similar situations in other places in the future.
It's always hard to measure whether that sort of thing works, but I think it's safe to say that it has indeed worked in this case! Though I have to admit, I didn't expect Twitter to be the place where it'd become relevant :)

- No alt text (request) = no boost.
- Boosts OK for all boostable posts.
- DMs are open.
- Flirting welcome, but be explicit if you want something out of it!
- The devil doesn't need an advocate; no combative arguing in my mentions.
Sometimes horny on main (behind CW), very much into kink (bondage, freeuse, CNC, and other stuff), and believe it or not, very much a submissive bottom :p
My spoons are limited, so I may not always have the energy to respond to messages.
Strong views about abolishing oppression, hierarchy, agency, and self-governance - but I also trust people by default and give them room to grow, unless they give me reason not to. That all also applies to technology and how it's built.
