trafficking rant
🪭when anti-racists say “the U.S. was founded on slavery” you REALLY need to understand what that means deep in your soul.
The point of racism is to enable slavers.
The point of patriarchy is to enable slavers.
The point of queerphobia is to enable slavers.
And so on.
In the industrial era we went from a society where slaves were legal property a slaver owned, or where a lord owned what you produced and where you lived but not your body, to one where “employers” rent the bodies of their “willing” employees on a temporary basis. There is technically nothing stopping you from leaving, but good luck surviving if you do.
A modern trafficker, likewise, does not have to physically entrap their victims. They use the same means employers do “do what I want if you want the means to live.” The capitalist system enforces the threat.
They just need to create the right conditions so that you will drop boundaries you normally wouldn’t.
trafficking rant
🪭I mean fuck. Yeah so, the reason I think some bigots are bigots is because by creating a bigoted society you can then more cheaply exploit the labor of the target population.
So like… say you have a disability that requires medication.
that means you are dependent on your access to medication for like, your body to function.
So an unscrupulous person who can get exclusive control of that medication can then use it to try to enslave you.
The easier it is to get that medication, or rather the more options you have for getting it or the more control you have over those options, the harder this is to do.
Another example of a thing a slaver can do is use blackmail or extortion. If you are undocumented, the slaver can use the threat of calling ICE to force you to do things.
The existence of bigoted people and biased laws vastly empowers these people.
You can really smell when someone's threat model doesn't include "you have been suddenly cut off from funding, community, or both and the average person doesn't care or thinks it was 'justified but a little heavy handed'"
Being constantly and actively scrubbed from the internet by political and financial powers deeming your existence "illegal" or "obscene" while the tech scene marginalizes you for being "unprofessional", really taints how you look at projects trying to "fix computing" because you aren't included by default.
If your going to #WHY2025 consider becoming an Angel and pick up some shifts. I promise it's fun and you get access to the Dishwashing Simulator. That one is so realistic the water even feels wet.
Or do any of the many many other jobs. From camera operator for the talks to Securing the car park.
Trust me: it will be a fun and thankful task, even washing dishes. (Ask me how I know.)

This is a perspective I've often found missing in the concerns about the effect of LLMs on education, the motivation aspect. It's much like the concerns about cheating and plagiarism (and I do group LLMs in that category)--punishing and concern-trolling the "problem students/people" who take shortcuts is just a way to individualize systemic problems. If the system did not come built in with incentives to use LLMs its use would not be so rampant. The pressure to use LLMs is simply the inevitable fruit of a system that worships productivity and conformity, and it's fruitless to moralize its use without looking at the root causes.
I think mastodon and gotosocial should have an optional pronoun badge that appears alongside your handle or username, so that people don't have to go to your profile to get that info. Knowing someone's pronouns makes interactions go a lot easier.
Does anyone who uses a screen reader think this would be taxing in any way? Would it make sense to also have a flag in the preferences settings to turn off this feature for screen readers?
new autism support service: update
I can contact them by email or text (she didn't even SUGGEST phone!) and she didn't try to rope me into their other groups and services even though I know they have them.
Overall, I feel very good about it. Only thing is, she DID misgender me, which the other service was much better about. But I don't know if that reflects on the service as a whole or just this much older lady who helped me.
new autism support service: update
Had my appointment yesterday! I am still utterly exhausted.
It went really well. The support worker was knowledgeable, sympathetic, and the entire conversation was led entirely by my needs. The service is very hands-off and rely on me to contact them when I feel comfortable, rather than locking me into fixed appointments.

Strong views about abolishing oppression, hierarchy, agency, and self-governance - but I also trust people by default and give them room to grow, unless they give me reason not to. That all also applies to technology and how it's built.
