Let's start a thread about this again. What's something that 'everyone knows' in your field, but that would probably shock the general public if they learned about it? 
I'll start: every 'magical' and 'innovative' service from a tech company that works better than you would expect from a computer, only does so because there's a lot of unnamed people behind the scenes papering over all the broken stuff and manually fixing things. The company just isn't telling you that.

re: venting, paid software, piracy, etc.
@joepie91 one example of paid software that isn't "every single user must pay" is DeArrow. it's actual purpose can be found on https://dearrow.ajay.app/ but upon installation, you are greeted with a $1 paywall (that gives a license key), with an option to get free access after waiting an amount of time (the amount of time has varied, and is currently about 12 hours). and a trial of course.
that's not the only method to get access. other semi-official methods include messing with the extension to bypass the paywall, using other people's license keys (like mime: Fh0Lk-df841), and third-party key generators (with key gen music). they'll all pretty much exist forever since the developer's intention isn't to price anyone out but to strongly encourage giving some money (so that the dev has money to continue working on the extensions), and the regulation around license keys is explicitly none ("Sharing is caring" is below the license key when viewed in the extension, dev statement, etc.)
in the end, everyone with or without the ability to pay gets access, and the dev gets money from those who have paid, and is a sizeable chunk of money received by the dev. (pie chart from discord guild and 2023)

It crosses my mind that some fascist ressentiment is from people who literally feel entitled to flying cars.
They grew up with fantasies of metal and plastic and glowing screens, and they've tried to realize those fantasies. When they finally realized they were allegories about industrialization and colonialism and slavery, they decided that's what they wanted.
The joke about the Torment Nexus isn't so funny when you realize they literally advocate torture.

how do you feel about posting about how you feel? i do post stuff about illness sometimes, but i also often worry that i'm just boring people or whinging, and that no one cares if i'm incapacitated (again/still). but it's such a MASSIVE part of my life (sigh), so sometimes i feel like i'm ... idk ... not lying? but ... something ... by glossing over it. but equally, i don't want to dwell, because it's not great for anyone to get mired. and it might be boring (and it will be repetitive).
anyway just interested to see what others think.

It also has a beautiful scent. For years people eliminated it as a so-called weed doing untold damage to insects which need it like the monarch. Do we really think that left to our own devices we’ll do a fair, equitable and complete job of pollination? Or will we simply build devices which pollinate lucrative and desired crops?
Clearly we need to ensure that our native pollinators survive and thrive for the health of the ecosystems in which we live.

It turns out there is a mathematical formula for determining the ideal number of billionaires in a society if you want to promote general wellbeing, health, community safety, etc. It's a little complicated, but here it goes:
• let A be the annual GDP of the population
• let B be the median wage of people over the age of 34
• let C be the average annual cost of housing *per person*
• let D be one standard deviation of the population age
• let X be the ideal number of billionaires
X = 0
This formula is very robust, surprisingly, and scales across all nations and economies that have ever been known to humankind. Really fascinating stuff!

Like, there's at least two parties involved in every transaction, and if you're only ever thinking about the needs of one of them, what the fuck are you even doing? Because it sure isn't "making sure people have food on the table"!

I'm kind of sick of the way some people talk about paid software, going so far as to call people 'freeloaders' or worse things when they use cracked versions.
Like, yeah, sure, software developers need to eat. But *so do other people* and the reality is that an awful lot of people who use cracked software do so because they literally cannot afford it.
If you care so much about sustainable software development, why does your thought process terminate at "charge a purchase/subscription fee and demand that people pay it", instead of continuing to think about *more inclusive* ways to make things sustainable?
Why do you refuse to think about anything beyond "every single user must pay"?
