Hundreds of thousands of Computers won't be able to upgrade to Windows 11, but that shouldn't make them eWaste.

Kudos to the @kde team for this amazing initiative!

i don't know how as a tall and fat person i only just now discovered what a good idea is reserving a seat next to the emergency exits when flying. my wife and i often reserve seats anyway so we sit together, and when available, to get extra leg room, but the emergency exit offers more leg space, more hip space (as the row is rarely occupied) and at a lower seat reservation cost, all for the small price of agreeing to pull a lever if necessary.
i get that for some it may be stressful, and i get why many avoid it. but if you don't mind those are literally the best seats in the plane.

anyone know how to get an owncast server up and running streaming to a domain i have with namecheap using an old laptop? ive tried it on a bunch of different linux distros now and keep getting stuck at the part where i have to set up the server to point at my website. its possible my dns is set up wrong, also my ports 80, 443, etc all seem to always be closed or just some sort of issue with them lmao. i tried using caddy and some other methods but none have worked. i have spent way more time on this now than i was anticipating so if you have any ideas or alternatives i am very open to them

‘Rafael Onak, a user experience writing manager at Apple, instructed an employee to add the phrase “external website” to the screen because it “sounds scary, so execs will love it.” Another employee gave a suggestion on how to make the screen “even worse” by using the developer’s name, rather than the app name. “ooh - keep going,” another Apple employee responded in Slack.’

It sure is interesting how Tauri doesn't get shit on anywhere near as much as Electron, even though there is very little technical difference between the two, and the 'arguments' against Electron are supposedly of a technical nature

reposting a vent I originally posted in the NixOS Matrix room

tangential, but I get kind of annoyed by comments along the lines of "let's migrate to <other platform>", as if that is a trivial thing to do with minimal consequences (which it isn't, and the constant floating of the idea does not help the sense of community stability either). doubly so when the current platform is one that we do actually have some degree of control over, like is the case with Matrix.

like, we can keep platform-hopping forever, tearing apart what's left of the community at every step, hoping that we'll eventually land on some platform from some company that somehow is prepared to do anything we need for us forever on a budget of "none"... or, more realistically, we could acknowledge that our community is ultimately ours to run and support, and that "everybody putting in their part to make it work" is the sustainable way forward, rather than expecting others to do it for us.

I do not miss the days where antivirus companies classified things as "malware" or "legitimate" based on whether there was a (US/EU) registered company behind it or not

Eventually I may just decide to be the nerd I want to see in the world and start a musical theatre Mastodon server, if the rest of you persist in not making one for me to join 🤔

Over twee weken is het zover, de derde editie van de rafe voor de rafelranden.

It's really telling how VS Code's release notes used to contain lots of handy new features, accessibility improvements, and technical fixes... and nowadays it's all just AI this, AI that, from start to end

If you think I'm exaggerating, I'm really not - look into the history of Download Valley (which is technically Israeli but that functionally is the same category as US/EU), and then cross-reference that with old news articles about 'spyware' and 'adware' that people couldn't seem to get rid of

dead fascists

It boggles my mind these mind numbing centrists will keep apologizing for fascism while asking minorities to please go somewhere else so they can pretend there is no "drama"

dead fascists

The centrist outrage over "the only good fascist is a dead fascist" lives rent free in my head.

Friends, being fascist is not an inherent property of a human. It's something they continue to choose to be. If they don't want to be dead they can just be not fascist.

@akjcv @helle in middle school we started refusing to say the pledge of allegiance because we were like "yo this is fucked up" (our brainwashed version of that thought was "this is some commie shit what") and while we didn't get in trouble for doing so, it definitely wasn't a popular thing for us to do

"it's America's FREEDOM that LETS you disrespect it like that you know"

The entire 'recommended for you' box on the IKEA site for me is just different sizes and combinations of SAMLAs...

and they're not wrong

Please do not respond to this with some variant of "but Electron is resource-hungry!" unless you've actually done a deep dive into resource spend, because I can assure you that I've already evaluated all the common superficial arguments long ago and every single one of them is false
