Afgelopen weekend ontving 'Flow' een Oscar voor beste animatiefilm. Deze film is gemaakt met de gratis open source software van @Blender, ontwikkeld in 1994 door Ton Roosendaal. Het programma kan gebruikt worden voor onder andere animatiefilms, games en VR.

Blender is gevestigd in Amsterdam en heeft in het verleden vaak samengewerkt met Waag Futurelab, onder andere aan het CineGrid project.

Goed om (weer) bevestigd te zien hoe FOSS bijdraagt aan onze creatieve industrie!

The phrase "driverless printing" is amusing. In the abstract it sounds silly, like a non feature. Why would anyone object to a hardware device having some drivers, right?

But if you've actually interacted with vendor supplied printer drivers then you know different. The idea of being able to print something without having to interact with software that was written by someone at Hewlett-Packard sounds like a gift from heaven.

I don't know the solution, but I'm just struck that none of the summaries of voting systems even seem to admit the possibility that that's a problem.

Because I'm [REDACTED], instead of doing what I need to be doing, I just went down an almost hour-long rabbithole on Wikipedia about voting systems.

It really strikes me that the idea that voting systems should accurately represent the opinions of the majority is just taken as sacrosanct.

Hey techy people! Does anyone know if it's possible to archive podcasts offline? Is there a good quality mp3 player sort of thing that would be good for this, which doesn't have annoying online functions? Anyone know how to do this? This is directly because the previous Justice Minister brought this case before the Supreme Court, in hopes of (I kid you not) MANDATING that spouses and parents have a say in one's legal gender.

The subsequent non-shithead Justice Minister tried to withdraw the motion, but the Court ruled that this was not possible.

And then they gave a ruling... that's the opposite of the shitty agenda of the former Justice Minister.

The Supreme Court of Poland has just ruled that changing legal gender will now proceed without trial.

The old system was not actually written in the law, but the route was to sue one's parents (the logic being that someone is legally responsible for assigning the person's gender wrong at birth). Which was humiliating, stupid, complicated and made no sense.

I am shocked. I am floored. This caught me completely off guard.

Needless to say, this is a HUGE step forward, even if a lot remains to be done.
