world and NL politics, long-ish
Maybe you've already heard of Rutte, the Secretary General of NATO, victim-blaming Zelensky and completely lacking any sort of spine regarding the aggression and abuse from Trump.
This guy was our prime minister in the Netherlands for many many years, and he was *exactly* like this here - completely spineless, wishful thinking, always being an apologist for the authoritarian, and excelling in doing absolutely fuck-all about any kind of problem while putting on a smile and pretending all is fine.
He and his party are the reason our entire country is stacking crisis upon crisis now, and why lots of government infrastructure is falling apart after having been neglected for over a decade, and now everyone has to scramble to pick up the pieces.
He is not doing "careful diplomacy" despite what some people may claim (or want to believe), and you only need to look at the trajectory of the Netherlands over the past decade to see the hard evidence of that. What he's doing is playing the 'enlightened centrist' while collecting a massive payout for declaring everything someone else's problem.
Rutte is an avatar for the banality of evil. He's the useless middle manager trying to justify his existence in the org chart, but on a nation-state scale.

DOORBELL 🔔
TIME ⏰
In the Netherlands, spring fish migration has begun! This literal live stream from a manually operated canal lock in Utrecht lets you click a button when you see fish, which sends a screenshot and lets the lock-keeper know to open the lock and let fish through.
The #Visdeurbel returns March 3 and there will be some exciting additions: updates from 4 fishways (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fish_ladder) across the Netherlands! The latest Visdeurbel news report explains: https://youtu.be/BQNPNQ6Ui2Q
My main Linux desktop is sometimes freezing under load. Nothing moves anymore on the screen, the computer is not shutting down, fans are not stopping, etc.
I have tried upgrading the bios, memtested and tried swapping sticks, swapping slots, etc. Nothing fixes it.
If anyone has any idea what might be causing that, I’m interested.
Also, I can’t reproduce the issue by running a stress test, it sometimes happens when I am not doing anything particularly compute intensive.
The "livable streets*" community in NYC is a good bunch of people who care about things like parks, public transportation, pedestrians and real accessibility. I've been to a lot of events. I know many of the faces.
The most recent protest was different. This became aparent when we were starting up some chants.
One of the chants? It had a SWEAR WORD in it! And well, that might not sound so surprising but I've never seen this group so angry. Or agreed that I was also angry too.

PSA, powertools, physical injury
So here's a PSA: if you intend to buy an angle grinder, DO NOT buy one that's continuous-operation. A safe cutting tool MUST have a switch that automatically turns the tool off as soon as you stop holding it, a so-called "dead man's switch".
Consider what happens if you accidentally drop your angle grinder, and it doesn't have automatic turn-off; the disc can hit the floor, which will launch it off in a random direction, which is potentially going to be your legs.
It can and will severely injure you if that happens, possibly fucking up your legs irrecoverably, for the rest of your life.
Do not buy continuous-operation cutting devices.
@smveerman I know what you mean... In the 1980's SNCB/NMBS organised special trains to the Carnaval in Binche (the biggest in Wallonia) using the oldest rolling stock available for some reasons...
I don't wanna hear "free and open Web" anymore, lol. Shit is not free, and it's as open as a few companies permit.
Yes, the W3C and IETF exist, and they have to carry the bloat of 25+ of standards that have now pushed us into this space/corner. And bullshit market econ of a race to the bottom for browsers has led us here.
I'll be *shocked* to see any government even adept enough to consider funding a Web engine for development, only because there's going to be lobbyists at every turn trying to crush that from even being proposed (again: fuck lobbying, all of it is literal bribery, leave the choice to the people on how their money is spent)
Guess I'm getting the cheaper one with a physical tactile button (which *is* a dead man's switch) then...

Technical debt collector and general hype-hater. Early 30s, non-binary, ND, poly, relationship anarchist, generally queer.
Sometimes horny on main (behind CW), very much into kink (bondage, freeuse, CNC, and other stuff), and believe it or not, very much a submissive bottom :p
Feel free to flirt, but if you want to actually meet up and/or do something with me, lewd or otherwise, please tell me explicitly or I won't realize :) I'm generally very open to that sort of thing!
Further boundaries: boosts are OK (including for lewd posts), DMs are open. But the devil doesn't need an advocate; I'm not interested in combative arguing in my mentions. I am however happy to explain things in-depth when asked non-combatively.
My spoons are limited, so I may not always have the energy to respond to messages.
Strong views about abolishing oppression, hierarchy, agency, and self-governance - but I also trust people by default and give them room to grow, unless they give me reason not to. That all also applies to technology and how it's built.
