In the fediverse, many of us appreciate #RSS to follow blogs and podcasts and such, but I never see anyone talking about using #iCalendar for following event calendars. An open standard of similar age to RSS, it works well and is widely supported by #calendar software—even Google still supports it, unlike RSS. I'd like to see more meetups publishing their event schedules, more apps doing interesting things with calendars, and more investment in the open calendar ecosystem. Wouldn't you?
A reminder to academics that might think you need to “engage” in “good faith” with blatantly immoral actions taken by hateful people: you super don’t.
Really.
Nothing happens if you don’t take up the role as devil’s advocate. No one is clamoring for that.
You won’t reach the end of your existence and regret having dismissed out of hand the positions of folks that would deprive others of their humanity.
#AskFedi: Does anyone know of one of those awesome-whatever lists, but for "software (of any kind) that is easy to set up and learn to use"?
27 years of building web apps and watching my peers build authoritarian surveillance and propaganda systems to support facists and grifters.
politics, nazis, actionable
Something to remember is that nazis and other fascists are, generally, not very courageous. They use fear to oppress others, but they don't usually know how to deal with someone who isn't scared.
One of the most effective things you can do against nazi rhetoric personally, is to openly defy it. To make it clear that you are not intimidated, that their fear isn't working on you. This will leave most fascists with a lack of strategies.
This is not *entirely* zero-risk, of course. But they have way, *way* less bite than their rhetoric would imply.
MIVB/STIB is taking a good step to solve the issue of homeless people on their network. Instead of policing them out like the rest of the world... they hired a whole team to provide social support, and have a bus built out as a safe place and a gateway to support

A complement to “don’t feed the trolls” is “what we pay attention to grows,” which I first encountered while reading adrienne maree brown’s Emergent Strategy.
In turning attention away from trolls, we can turn it toward the practices of care through which we build resilient communities able to guide change.
The WINE 10.0 change list looks amazing:
- ARM support
- Many graphics pipeline and touch input improvements, could be worth trying this with programs like Paint tool SAI and CSP
- Better high DPI and scaling support
- Native Wayland support
- Improved COM/RPC proxies and calling
- Moving from GStreamer to FFmpeg for decoding things should improve many things, also things like game intro videos etc.
- and much more
Now to the kicker with meshtastic.
The project is run in the usual tech-bro seeming ways and are rude ass fuck to new comers with less experience / platform than I who've made the -same- observations about floodfill's limits.
The core team is die on the hill of the shitiest routing algo possible because they I guess don't want to read anything about routing algos research.
Bruh... I worked in a networking research lab in the early 2000's, almost every excuse this team has made is bullshit.
This is a subtoot and should probably be a blog post. But basically some techbros are re-inventing mesh radios (badly) going on like my 20th year of tinkering in this corner of tech.
Low cost, developer friendly mesh radios have kinda been going in circles for decades.
So in many ways I guess I shouldn't be surprised to review yet another cheap mesh radio project and realize, "dude this just plain sucks and isn't improving at all, oh and the community is kinda awful".

Strong views about abolishing oppression, hierarchy, agency, and self-governance - but I also trust people by default and give them room to grow, unless they give me reason not to. That all also applies to technology and how it's built.
