PSA: if you're on a mega-instance like mastodon.social and want to move to a better instance but you don't want to leave your history behind, I will personally help you run my SQL script that loads your account export into a gotosocial database

A friend showed me Punch-Out!! (NES) last Friday, and while it's not really my jam, there's a little detail I've been thinking about a lot where when you knock out the first guy he spins around and falls over, but there's this part of the animation where he pauses in a funny position for a moment and the sound makes it feel like he's rapidly spinning two or three times around that point and the effect is so well executed you feel it even if you focus on how he's not actually moving.

I bet we could do some really awesome stuff if sound design, graphics, and animation were that tightly integrated in games today. Hard for large studios to do that without interdisciplinary departments though, but smaller studios could clean house here. I think it's a mistake to treat treating graphics as this super advanced thing that carries stands alone, but alas the industry is broadly still under the tyranny of 90s magazine ad thinking.

You speedrun video games, I speedrun surgery recovery, we are not the same

Sure, I was assigned a gender at birth. I also got assigned homework at school but I didn't do that either.

It's okay to turn off the news.
You were never meant to carry the burden of the entire world.

I heard we're stress-testing pixelfed's infrastructure, so here's a photo of what I think is a variety of Catharanthus roseus

We're still accepting submissions for the #fluConf2025 track on #inclusivity and #accessibility in tech. Broad interpretations of the topics are welcome, ranging from the technical implementation details of how to build for and with assistive technologies, to the many cultural factors that act as barriers to adoption of free/open software and participation in the wider ecosystem.

Share your insights on designing hiring processes, identifying biases in data and barriers to access, the lost art of progressive enhancement, and whatever else the themes mean to you.

Apply up until midnight of January 19th, 2025 (anywhere on Earth)

I brought my Olympus 35 RD to #37c3 this year and took a whopping 72 shots, … just to find out later that the camera jammed twice, unnoticed by me ;—;

There were 0 pictures on one film and just 1 picture on the other, the single picture is of course a compose of an unknown number of other shots. That however turned out to be a very happy accident. I love the resulting picture, so far I have found 13 (!!) separate shots within! :O
It’s so colourful and vibrant, I’m so sad about the jammed camera

"Wat vooral opvalt in de woordvoering tot nu toe is het gebrek aan nuttige informatie, en welke informatie ontbreekt. Als er daadwerkelijk een gevaarlijke situatie was ontstaan, dan had de politie dat toch wel gezegd? Dan hadden ze daarmee toch demonstranten kunnen overtuigen?"

Just from recent personal experience it’d be really cool to have an up to date resource on X11/Wayland GPU compatibility

food, health update, transplantation (8)

I just learned that the normal procedure is to feed people liquid food until they recover enough to eat solid food, but I apparently beat them to it and requested (and got) sandwiches before they could get around to putting in the liquid food restriction, and that went completely fine so they've just decided not to restrict my food type because I can apparently immediately eat normally lmao

If I had to describe my current mood, it would probably be something like "full of life, and craving for tasty food"

Hello from post-surgery recovery room. Surgery was textbook, everything working, currently breakfasting with tea, cheese sandwiches, yoghurt/vla mix and lemonade. And laptop of course because I cannot sit still.

Doctors were - as per tradition - somewhat baffled about me going from "awake" to "fully functioning and conscious" in like 5 minutes. I asked if I got a recovery highscore (while reassuring them I don't intend to rush).

The answer: "you're definitely pretty close."
