Not feeling okay about US politics

If a vote for one guy is a vote for genocide, a vote for the other guy is a vote for genocide, and you're out here telling us a vote or non-vote otherwise is a vote for genocide then it seems to me you've admitted that we already have a democracy so impotent that it's incapable of steering away from committing genocide.

You're going to then say anyone who points this out is a shill for Putin who is aiding in the demise of democracy.

Putin isn't the one curtailing the choices to the point that there is no opposing genocide.

Referring to fediblock and TBS friendly instances as "fedi HOA" is racist and I can explain how. bringing this post back every time I see a white person doing this

Some white folks are continuing to use "fedi HOA" to describe the group of us who are trying to make the fedi a safer place for BIPOC. Seemingly, they have chosen to disregard the previous critiques that have circulated naming that practice as antiblack. So, I am going to quote myself from September of last year.

The following is an excerpt from this post: blackqueer.life/@tillshadeisgo

"Our Anti-White Grievance of the Day today is (get your white supremacist bingo cards ready, folks)........APPROPRIATION!

And just in case you're going to pretend you don't believe me, I'll give you a previous example and the current example. For the ones that need their hands held.

Our previous example is the word "woke". Woke originated with AAVE some time ago and more recently, in the past several years, has been distorted into almost unrecognizability as an anti-black dogwhistle. How did this happen, you may ask? Why, it's not complicated at all: the covert racists found out a word Black people were using and copied it! Now, similarly to how these instances of racist telephone typically go, they took the word but lost some of the nuance from the term. This led to them frequently misusing it publicly. And once that had started happening, why there was nothing for it but for the overt racists to go ahead and coopt it from the covert racists (who they are obsessed with, by the way) so they could have their dogwhistle term du jour ('politically correct' was starting to wear out). This dogwhistle, mind you, has very little to do with its original usage, but of course they can't tell the difference so they don't care. And so we can see how this was an example of appropriation.

Our more recent example of this phenomenon is none other than the nasty little number lots of you are tossing about right now, fedi HOA. I'm not the first person to point this out of course, but since when have white people bothered listening the first time? For 10 ally points, can anyone in the class tell me the history of homeowner's associations, housing, and white supremacy? Anyone? Well, in case you don't know, feel free to look it up. Throw in redlining, the wealth gap, and the GI bill while you're at it. Those who do so or are already aware, you can understand why a lot of Black folks who tried fedi have spoken about the feeling of HOA-style treatment they received. Some of you were even the ones doing it! And now, in EXACTLY THE SAME WAY AS THE PREVIOUS EXAMPLE, several of you white fedizens started to use the term fedi HOA. Only it's not quite the same thing when you all use it. Lost a bit of nuance, hasn't it? You're not actually talking about a historical comparison of systematic racial discrimination in physical space to systematic racial discrimination in digital space, are you? No, you're using it to mean that Black people and people of color are creating and enforcing boundaries that you don't like.

So, you can understand why that's not the same thing, right? Some of the nuance got lost in the shuffle? Now, can someone tell me (for 50 ally points this time!) why that's bad? Can anyone identify how appropriation enabled antiblack discrimination in both cases? Anyone at all? How about how abusive it is to get this aggressive over someone else's boundaries? No? Yes?

Great. Well, at least you learned something."

i have so much ADHD even my unfinished projects had concurrent unfinished subprojects

First castle done. Not that interesting but still a beautiful landscape. And it is also very quiet :3

Not to brag, but I remember when you could slam the phone down to hang up on someone.

It was spectacular.

Have you ever tried to measure a cat with a tape measure? It will make you question the solidity of dimensional space.

Pica, small cat
Height: 22 to 47cm
Girth: 33 to ??cm (ouch cm)
Length: 37cm
Length w/ tail: 66cm
Weight: 5.9 pounds/ 2.7 Kg
Max Length (Dangle): 74cm! oh no

she's getting longer.

Rate of Enlonganmentation
dML/dt: 1.2cm / second

No signs of increase stopping. Cat keeps increasing.
All clear! ALL CLEAR!
Soon she will be in all locations.

This was a bad project idea.

me: okay, I can use an arduino for this project
also me: let's write the firmware in rust, like normal people do

More conduit posting, sorry. But I’m rather proud of the idea I just had that totally worked. I didn’t know where one of the conduits in my house actually terminated and I solved it by dropping an earbud playing at max volume in it and looking for the sound. Totally worked!

Cats exist in-between many different "states".

Famously they are both solid and liquid.
If you put them in a box, they are both alive and dead.
They are starving, but also have just been fed.
They both want belly rubs, and despise belly rubs.

These are just a few examples, but there are countless more, most of which we don't even know.

Usually when you try to measure something that is in-between two different states, it will resolve into one state or the other. But because cats exist in-between so many different states, when measured, instead of all those in-between states resolving to one or the other, it can pull reality into all of those different in-between states!

This can create a kind of "cosmic vibration", that if allowed to reach a harmonic frequency, could tear reality apart!

Cats instinctively know this, which is why they fight tooth and claw any attempts to measure them.

: Are the "OCS" as defined by Nextcloud, and the "OCS" as defined by FreeDesktop, actually the same thing, or are they different specs?

every time you install an adblocker a techbros dreams dies

@joepie91 This is a good point. Like you say web dev has been caught between being coopted by dishonest tech cos and been seen by outsiders as not worth defending. Then we had the mass layoffs and—honestly—it’s not surprising that there isn’t much of a community-driven field left.

So, it may feel like I’m harping on a bit about JSR—the tech industry’s latest attempt to ‘fix’ the JavaScript ecosystem—but it kind of bugs me how little discussion there is about it

Like, it’s literally a proposal by a VC-funded startup to coopt existing infrastructure and the only comments I’m seeing online are “ooh, they put a lot of work into making it fast.”

There’s no discussion of what it’s for, whether it tells us anything about npm or how that can be improved.

climate catastrophe, news from my country, flooding

oh and by the way. ecocide done by other corporations is finally catching up to my country too. we are having massive floods this spring. a lot of towns or small cities are being in a state of emergency because the rivers are overflowing. the government doesn't give a shit of course, just like when the wildfires happened. we need a revolution

Library API naming poll! Which makes more sense? :boost_requested:

Great news coming from Germany: today, the Bundestag adopted the gender self-determination law, which will allow trans people to change their gender on their official papers with a simple declaration at the civil registry. Gone are the medical requirements. 🏳️‍⚧️

The law isn't perfect (a 3-month delay is to be observed before the change takes effect; minors will have to go through a dispute in court if their parents oppose the change), but it's still a huge step forward.
