I’m going to Essen (last Belgian station) on this “Intercity” but there is an hourly train to Roosendaal that crosses the border. But it’s a Regional that stops in every tiny place, and is operated with a knackered 1970s EMU

Me: I'm not autistic
Also me, after meeting a neighbor I haven't talked to in months on a tram: You know, these trams are Pesa Swings produced in the Pesa factory in Bydgoszcz. The funny thing is that Pesa also produces trains for regional lines in Italy and they just so happen to refer to these trains as Swings, so Pesa Swing can refer to either a tram or a train depending where you are! Speaking of regional trains...

The first real conference talk I gave was on a large stage and I was timetabled against the first public presentation of d-bus and it was a community I had no real prior experience with and yeah it was fucking terrifying but I promise it does get easier

Is there any African who is constantly invited to news orgs as an "expert" of a European country & seen as such by a bunch of European citizens? Does anyone see how bizarre it is that these ppl are elevated to "experts" because someone needs a white person to invite as "neutral"?

Now on CNN, to discuss the situation in England, with us is "England expert" Timnit Gebru.

Now on BBC, to discuss the situation in Norway, with us is "Norway expert" Timnit Gebru.

LLMs, academic papers

Reading a preprint of a paper, noticing that the language is strangely breathless and superlative about the system under test... I scroll down and sure enough, "we used OpenAI to improve the text".

FFS, stop doing this fucking shit.

I’ll let you in on a secret: I love sporadically updated weblogs. I subscribe to over 1200 feeds and most of them are sporadic or even technically “inactive”. Months often pass between updates

It means that every post published was important to the writer

Back in the days of snail mail, letters that began with “It’s been a while since I last wrote to you” were the ones people cherished the most

You don’t need to post every day or even every week to have a blog that matters

Goedemorgen vanaf station Tienen.

As a straight middle-aged white dude who worked for decades in tech, my superpower is admitting that I don't know enough about something to have an opinion.

You could also develop this superpower.

[muting this, because yikes, there's a lot of y'all. and yes, yes, this statement has limitations and boundaries.]

I'm entirely serious about that, by the way, this is not a joke or hyperbole - and it is admittedly very good for that purpose

I feel like the funny thing for me with the Tiktok ban is that a lot of Americans, on either side of the debate, don't seem to realize that Tiktok feels to Americans like every single social media platform feels to people outside the US. You're telling me the app is located outside your country and your government's control, and you don't know how its data gets handled in that country? That's every app, to me.

DHL is firmly convinced that since they've loaded the parcel onto a delivery vehicle on 20th (today) they can make the delivery on 19th (yesterday).
