why oppressed folks seem so angry
extracting this bit from another unrelated post:
like, one of the reason why people (read: oppressed folks) seem to fight so strongly and forcefully for things is because like. we are so used to being completely ignored. it's tiring to go through the same stages of speaking nice at first, then progressively less nice until you find the right level of firmness that's required to get someone to actually listen to you.
I know because I've done this. back when I was at university, I went to physically sit down with loads of different people to ensure that they were doing things correctly, with trans folks in mind, ensuring that they were actually using people's preferred names instead of their legal names in the university systems. it was fucking exhausting, because I would do this, and then myself and others would be invited to meetings where people show up with big slides and powerpoints about these cool new ideas they have that showed they didn't even fucking listen to us. at one point, they claimed that they needed to add a profanity filter before they could let anyone change their preferred name in the system, because apparently, letting people naturally face the consequences of naming themselves "fucknut johnson" was worse than trans people being treated respectfully
so, if you're at this point and just fucking tired of dealing with the bullshit and want to get your point across, it feels like you approach every situation with full body armour and a battleaxe to just talk things out, and it sets people off. like, woah, calm down, why are you so uptight about this?
because I know otherwise you won't fucking listen to me. and sure, maybe I'm being too strong for you specifically, but I don't know that until I try, and quite frankly, I'm done fiddling with people's attention spans until they listen and will instead just slam my fists on the desk in front of them immediately. gets their attention.
I don't like showing up to situations like this, but at a certain point I have to, because I have tried the nice option and it has failed me every single time. so, if you don't like it, consider how many times the nice option has worked for you and people like you, and think about that instead
NixOS, governance
If you care about the future of #NixOS, its governance, and its policies, right about now would be a good moment to get involved.
Some of the issues currently on the table:
- NixCon sponsorship by an arms dealer (Anduril)
- Moderation issues in the community, safety threats to marginalized folks
- What acceptable forms of participation are for the formal RFCs
A lot of things feel like they are coming to a head right about now, with the community growing rapidly, and I suspect that the decisions made are going to have long-term effects.
So if you've been waiting for a moment to get involved, that moment is probably now.

Meanwhile, in the #NixOS moderation debacle: jonringer, one of the dudes who has been harassing marginalized folks for years, posts a screen-ful screed that boils down to "our behaviour should be free of consequences, that's the only way to be neutral, and also you should ban everyone who told us 'no'".
Except in flowery 'respectable white dude' language so that it reads like a completely unremarkable report you might need to read through for work, and I am not confident that moderators will see through this.

This is *after* they have already been told to "accept it and move on", which they have ignored on multiple occasions to keep pushing.
I would hope that the moderators eventually realize that the demands from these people will never stop, that the 'trust' they complain about will never increase, up until the policy is "no moderation whatsoever". So far, this realization does not seem to have landed yet.

Over 1,300,000 civilians and military died in the Vietnam War. Politically it was the 60,000+ young, Americans who died that forced a shift in the way the US conducted warmaking.
The US public wouldn't tolerate such death tolls, at least not from drafts. The deaths of foreign civilians didn't make a similar impression. (But should have.)
The protests and anger over the draft and Vietnam War might have seemed futile at the time. But, it did force a change. Those protests mattered.

I have noticed a worrying trend in computer science where topics that are have surprising, non-intuitive properties are now taught as “oh, treat this as a magic black box, you will never understand it”. I hate this as people then “teach” by discouraging exploration in the space

Germany is accelerating in its shift to the right and I’m not seeing any sufficient resistance. Partially this can be attributed to even the try of doing so being heavily prosecutable. Yet still there’s a difference between not wanting to be subject to state violence and complying with a shot societies rules. There’s ways you can fuck around and ffs I’m not seeing it.
I’m seeing how shit that was implemented five to ten years ago being enshittified to death.
I’ve recently reconnected with a few lost friends and the first things I get to know of about the mean time are:
non prosecuted sexual abuse in numbers that are actually scary and I can count myself in the statistic
ridiculous medical & drug abuse, including the worst way to learn that oxycodone is actually available
I want to look away and run, but once again I can’t - I’ll not refuse to at least try no matter how much it’ll be worth.
