Trans, suicide, nlpol

Slaap zacht, lieve Antonina.

Trying a new personal position where if a tech company lays people off after posting strong earnings, I don't buy anything new from them and cancel any existing subscriptions (at least in the short term). So there goes Discord Nitro

OpenAI, Aaron Swartz, suicide

When billionaires ask to do illegal copying of all known works it gets taken seriously.

When a kid simply downloads scientific articles too fast they (lawyers) hound him until he commits suicide.

I don't want better funding or whatever for Open Access :OpenAccess:

I want copyright on academic material abolished by law

Just legalize Scihub :scihub: for fuck's sake

This is at least 8cm of ice which is necessary because that’s a field underneath. If you look closely you can see the grass waving in the moving water underneath while you skate.

medical software

Unrelated to my previous toot, just learned that the vendor of my hospital's patient portal went bankrupt late last year (different vendor)

racism, medical

Love (do not love) running into racist shit in medical software...

Fuck you too, Epic Systems Corporation

PSA:
“if it was important, you would have remembered it.” And “if you cared, you would have remembered.“

Neither of these claims have any basis in reality. Importance, and caring have no correlation to whether a memory is formed.

These sentences only serve to gaslight people about a chemical, process that they cannot control.

Please spread this knowledge.

Please stop gaslighting people with memory issues.

Wait, AGDQ got rid of its masking policy? Maybe they should switch charities to some long covid research foundation then, since they think it's okay to have their attendees speedrun Long Covid% category

Lmao I just looked up their covid "policy" and besides recommending but not mandating masks it also talks about handwashing. Because of course it fucking does. Gotta keep up that hygiene theater and pretend that fomite transmission, not a single case of which has been conclusively proven in 4 years of pandemic, is a significant factor in spreading a literal airborne virus

All of this during the worst covid surge since the emergence of omicron, with a new variant that is as different from omicron as omicron was from the initial ancestral version of covid, and which is more severe and immune evasive

So disappointing 😒

re: Matrix governance shit, rant

To summarize this whole thing: if you're in a crisis, I lend you a helping hand to get you out, and your response boils down to "you didn't file the correct form"... then I don't think you actually want to solve the crisis.

Sure sucks how capitalism ruins everything it touches, huh?

re: unnecessarily harsh take on alt text that is also a subpost

like I call this "unnecessarily harsh" because I know that people don't just wake up and decide to be ableist, and that in fact, we do live in a society

and that working on your internal oppressions is a nontrivial amount of energy you do have to spend, that people might not have because society is already being shit to them

but like, at least as someone who has spent a lot of time getting over those internalised issues… it feels like people are confusing the energy to actually do the thing, with the energy required to become a better person, and as a result do neither

like… sorry, buddy, but if you're upset about people calling you ableist, they're doing that because you are

unnecessarily harsh take on alt text that is also a subpost

honestly writing alt text is a lot of work that often gets unnoticed but I do genuinely feel like people don't understand the distinction between

"this is a lot of work I don't have the energy to put in"

and

"performing this work makes me think about how low-vision and low-bandwidth people interact with media and how that must be a shit experience with so few people accommodating them, which makes me feel bad, which I don't like feeling, so, I'm not writing alt text so I don't have to think about it"

like it's one of those cases where people think so rarely about other people's experiences that the act of doing so tires them out, and then they can use that as an excuse for not having energy to do the thing

like again, alt text is difficult, and that is a genuine energy drain for some. as an autistic person, I know all too well how difficult it is to be forced to describe things in multiple ways, and having to make a picture and write text for the picture? sometimes that feels impossible

but sometimes I genuinely don't believe that people are being genuine about their inability to do alt text. like they don't see it as part of the full package of sharing a thing and so they do the visual part and then oops! out of energy, sorry, I'm still gonna post and get all the likes and shares tho~
